Volvo Ocean Racers in Singapore

Finally got down to One-Fifteen Marina to see the Volvo Village or whatever they call it. All 7 boats are in the water and we were able to get up close and personal.

You get a good perspective of living on this overgrown dinghy when you see them. No luxury, just performance. Quite different than our average cruiser member would be used to. And one of the Ericson boats had not stowed their sails. There were piles of them on the dock. Amazing.

The other reason I went was to go to the Skipper's meeting for the spectator boats. Tomorrow they are doing 2 X 2 lap windward leward races. They set up a VIP area on the water where I think we will be able to get within spitting distance of the middle gate. It should be very cool and I will get pics for sure. Based on the number of skipper's we should have 70-100 boats or so out.

Sunday they are doing a pro am with a similar set up. Couple of interesting points were made.

With the northeast monsoon in and if the wind is up these boats will be doing up to 25 knots - stay out of the way and off the course!

If a boat leaves the course due to a failure or for any reason and is headed at you - do not maneuver to avoid - they will handle avaoidance.

I thought that second one interesting. How do you think it will play at the inquiry?

Spectator Boats

Hi will be arriving in Singapore tonight... do you have any recommendations on where we could look to get a ride on a spectator boat for tomorrow's ProAm race?

Thanks!

The last two times they were in Baltimore, I helped coordinate the volunteer effort.

I had one guy, 80 years old, who gave some of the best talks about the VOR and the vessels.

It is a shame they only have one stop in the US.

Baltimore/Annapolis misses them.
