This was news here in Hawaii a little while ago and I posted it with just the vessel's name. Then I noticed that "Sanctuary" was getting a lot of attention when the word abandoned was added to the thread title. Just in case someone might be interested in scenarios.

Owner has plans to move boat - Mauinews.com | News, Sports, Jobs, Visitor's Information - The Maui News is the latest news. She was abandoned about 700 miles from here and set adrift with her main still up. If you do a search the Hawaii Tribune-Herald has a couple articles to fill in the story from the hired Captain's point of view.

So, reading from the other thread, delivery captain Philip Johnson was seriously injured during rough weather.

According to Cruise Ship Law ( : quantumleap : Cruise Law News ) the boat had mechanical problems throughout much of the journey.
"After the sailboat left California, it began experiencing problems with its generators and batteries, which compromised power to the sailboat's satellite phone and GPS. "

( Rescue at sea | StAugustine.com Rescue at sea | StAugustine.com ) was an account by passenger witnesses. "The sailboat encountered rough swells and a rogue wave that knocked out its power and injured the captain. "

Not saying that this is at all the case here, and knowing that a boat can be perfectly sound when it leaves the harbor and then develop issues, but:

Out of curiosity, how often do delivery captains take command of a vessel for which they have concerns about its safety and ability to complete a passage? And, if a delivery crew is injured while on a vessel whose equipment proves deficient in some way, how likely is the owner to have some liability for what happens?

The vessel wan't deficient, the crew was. I cracked a rib on a delivery going around Point Conception, but that didn't stop me from getting the boat to San Francisco.

I have to agree. Generators, phones, GPS, I wonder what those people are doing on board.
I sailed back in the 80' s similar length boats without GPS, generators and phones. A lot of crap alltogether. The basic elements of rough weather sailing were clearly not available.

Argh, I only use me trusty horse to get the groceries, don't trust them new fanged auto-mo-biles, too soft them young folk, the wife washes all the clothes in the local river by hand, keeps hold of theses skills me grandmother had. Arrrrrrrrgh

Do not judge why people abandon boats, you weren't there. It's got nothing to do with " elements of rough weather sailing" crew interaction is the biggest factor in " pressing the button". If they want off they get off.

I won't judge. The insurance will do that. And THEY were not there too.

Being a former Coastie, in grounding cases they will stick the owner (and he may try to use his insurance to pay for the costs) with the financial burden, plus any enviromental fees and fines.
