Lightbulb Parties, traffic chaos for QM2 & QE2

February 21, 2007 07:47am
Article from:

THE spectacular party Sydney put on for the historic reunion of Queen Mary 2 and Queen Elizabeth 2 last night would have left visitors thinking New Year's Eve was being celebrated several weeks late.

The two queens of the sea greeted each other with the sounds of their whistles as the QE2 sailed past her sister ship docked at the Garden Island navy base about 7pm.

QM2 & QE2

I live in Sydney, and made my way to the harbour during the day to look at the QM2. The boat is enormous and dwarfs anything nearby - even many of the harbourside buildings. The weather gods were kind, and Sydney Harbour provided a spectacular backdrop to this special occasion.

If anyone gets the opportunity to see either of these ships, make the effort to go. Anyone with a remote interest in boats, cruising or the such, will be impressed and rewarded for their efforts.

Fair winds

Yo,
Had QM11 come out of Southampton, UK and pass us close by in the Solent when on a yacht.
Maybe its the colour scheme - maybe its the size - but she took my breath away as she drawfed us whilst passing.
Good looking ship - and the only time I began thinking it might be worth doing the UK / New York run on something like her.

Are the tugs a local requirement or did they build her without the bow & stern thrusters used by the other new cruise liners? Part of a more "traditional" design perhaps?

IIRC she uses a CODAG*-electric propulsion system with four steerable propellor/motor units mounted underneath the hull (and no rudders). The tugs are almost certainly a local requirement.

* COmbined Diesel And Gas turbine, a system more commonly found on frigates and destroyers.
