ooops, you should try taking one end of the reefing line down to the boom and tie it off and the other end to the outhaul through a winch etc. That way the pull is down as well as back. Job done. If it's hard to winch down, ease the mainsheet or vang a bit. We all learn the same way, good luck sailor.
