Description: After a short hop from Humboldt Bay to Crescent City I went for a shower and this is the view I had from the shower. A favorite of mine.

Looks idyllic but can you tell me why are you the only mast in the shot. Surely there is more than one yacht in the marina?

Re: Crescent City "magic"

Good catch Sophie. We thought the same thing while we wandered around. This picture was taken around 5/01/14 as the marina was just opening again. It took TWO tsunamis' to wipe it out and then years to rebuild it. At the time I took this picture there were no more than about 6 other boats docked and most of them being working commercial boats. It is a well protected marina and I would say from an engineering perspective..... Almost said massively overbuild but when it comes to Tsunamis I don't think that is possible. Lets call it "Super Sturdy".
Back to your question, Crescent City is not exactly in a population hub. Being at the Redwood Forest it is a well traveled area but doesn't seem to attract the pleasure boaters. If you look at the most recent Google Sat Maps there is about 4 sailboats now. I am seriously thinking of sailing Magic down there in September of '17 and leaving her their for until spring so I can sail the Pacific from there in better weather than we have in Oregon. It is only about a 5.5 hr drive.

Sounds like a great idea. Looks like a lovely yacht. As food for thought for the future, could it be rather isolated because, super sturdy now = super expensive? Although that may not be an issue at all and yada, yada, I only ask for my own plans. Have fun.

Re: Crescent City "magic"

I looked for at least 15 years to find this boat. Not super expensive, but maintenance costs can be a bit costly depending on what you need. I did replace the old Perkins with a new Yanmar 4JH4 100hp Turbo. With a new 23" 17pitch prop. I can cruise at little over 9 knots at one gallon per hour. The engine upgrade was on the downside of $30K. I did find a way to cut some costs on the engine purchase. Installed in San Francisco Bay area I got a deal on the labor hours at $115 per hour for the install. Believe me that is a deal there.
I will post some interior pictures later. It is beautiful inside and out. During my search I found a ton of PROJECTS and that is not what I was looking for. A boat of this age in pristine condition is full of projects to keep things right.

Well I look forward to your images. Plus I'll check the Marina charges myself, that is easy. We always look for projects because well, because we can but I and t'other are starting to feel the effects of having used our hands all our lives whilst we refit our floating footpath on her swing mooring. We will move her for some harder stuff but. Bummer I'm really noticing is my inferior ability due to my left side having been paralysed and now nerve damage restricts strength . The great thing is peeps at Mill Bay (Doubtless Bay , Far Nth NZ) always get a smile with me getting out of the inflatable on the jetty with one leg not doing as it's told but I'm happy to oblige and I was pleased to see someone else in that position (although it may have had more to do with his merriment) last Thursday. Our mooring is in a very sheltered Bay and one thing of note is, it's sheltered from and gale force winds. I always feel Rhombus is safe where she is. It's a blessing in disguise that we didn't think about to be honest, or I didn't.

Re: Crescent City "magic"

I just looked up Doubtless Bay and it does look as though it is a pretty safe haven but open to the southern seas. I can't imagine the the size of the seas that might generate during storms.
Between Crescent City CA and Newport Oregon I spent 32 hours in the cockpit with 16-18' waves and 38 & 40 mph winds. I am so proud of the Gulfstar as not once did we take water over the bow.
Sorry to hear that you are dealing with some physical afflictions. Seems to me the abuse I have put my body thru is catching up to me too. Years of long distance running in college is catching up to my knees. Sometimes it is not as easy to get up off my knees or contort into the engine room. Vision thru bi-focals really "SUCK". That in conjunction with working extreme hours makes it hard for me to get motivated to dig into some projects. One step on Magic and my troubles go away and something says... Relax... It will wait....

Re: Crescent City "magic"

A couple of times you have referred to yourself as a Newbie sailor. I thought everyone in NZ was born on a sailboat. Tell me a little about your sailing life so far.

I have been on sailboats since I was 4 years old. Starting in the Great Lakes on Lake Michigan with friends of my parents I grew up crewing on most of the races on Lake Michigan.
You have found the correct place to be to have all your questions answered. The feed back I have gotten on my nav system issues has been very valuable so far.
Have a bit of the flu with a fever that hit me this weekend and have not followed thru with all I had planned to do.

I'm a land person through and through. We live on 6 and a half acres of Native bush 100 m (330 ft) above sea level but it's only 15 minutes to Mill Bay where Rhombus is moored. My man is the one who loves boats . He has built and raced yachts in both the UK and NZ. He's also has a bit of a photographic memory in that he doesn't forget so his repertoire of knowledge makes him the " go to"man at the local. He also knows engines ,electricals, and engineering along with sailing. We have been building from scratch in the bush which makes it also helpful that he's a builder and we now have solar power that runs the house efficiently and free. We have really got the equivalent on the boat. I'm into the interior design stuff and landscaping stuff so sailing wise I'm learning all the time from him but my only biggest problem that arises is sea sick in the cabin We are really enjoying Rhombus but she is getting a bit of attention at the mo . He wants to rewire after he puts on the new railing. So now we just do a bit of day sailing as he tests that which he betters, it could be anything and I keep changing her interior. We are in the throes of a new galley as well. The design is nearly finished in our heads . Once that starts it will be a week turnaround, he doesn't muck around. So I am a newbie and yes many sailors in NZ,many kids sailing but I didn't as a child . I'm just following t'others footsteps and I guess I want to do a bit of sailing because I have made many changes due to my berry aneurysm. Once you nearly die, are in a coma for a couple of months then take 2 years to learn to walk (and talk ,although that was easy), once that happens, sailing sounds like worth doing. Hey, that was way back in 2003/4 this is now and I plan to enjoy our yacht Rhombus. Also we both peruse CF . I find all the info great. So far we haven't needed help but I'm sure we may.

Just noticed this, if you look a bit closer you can locate Mill Bay Mangonui in the Doubtless Bay area , then you can see why I think it's a protected spot. It is Mill Bay that we are moored. I'll try put a decent photo up.
