Rigging the Main

I have a O'day 20. The main has a boltrope in the foot and I have attached it thru the grove before. Can I rig the main loose footed without interfering with anything or does the main have to be attached?

You can try it, certainly. But the two types of mains are cut differently. If you don't like the bolteope version you or a sailmaker can cut the extra material off.
