Are You a Secret Dumpster Diver ?

Are you or have you been an active dumpster diver around a marina or boatyard?

Besides food, what are some of the most interesting things you've found for your boat while refitting?

Do others in your area share your secret passion for finding these boat bargains, and how many others have you met with that mindset while diving yourself?

I may be a Low Budget cruiser.... but I've never been a skip rat....
Some things are just a step to far...
I leave that for the truly desperate and the non fussy eaters amonst us...
I'd choose starvation... with water that gives me 4 weeks normal activity... long enough to raise some work for cash...

Not something I set out to do, but if i was to take a peak and see something worth wile for the boat, well it would be stupid not to.

Re: Are you a secret dumpster diver?

Food?? Hell no!!!

Boat stuff? Hell yes!!!

If you hang around yuppie based marinas some really good stuff shows up. I've retrieved a good 25 L outboard fuel tank, a great laminated cutting board, 30 metres of nearly new 12 mm yacht braid that had some diesel spilled on it and endless other less notable stuff. The best thing that I didn't grab was a full set of golf clubs in a leather cart/bag, complete with the little snoods on the woods. It was right on the top of the pile one monday morning... must have been a bad round on sunday! Fortunately I have never succumbed to the alleged magic of golf and so could resist the temptation.

For the less adventurous, many cruiser-oriented marinas around the world have a "junk table" where yotties leave surplus gear for others to pick over... a great way to recycle things that are too good to trash, but are no longer useful to you.

I bet that Indy (Goprisco) approves of this practice!

Cheers,

I am surprised that there are people who don't! Gosh, it's almost like a garage sale, but you don't have to bargain or bring cash

Re: Are you a secret dumpster diver?

Watched 5 racing boats strip off their exotic halyards after the season. Got 14 nice new dock lines, kept 5 sold the rest for $25 each.
Fairly new Dahon bike with a broken rear sprocket, think it was about $30 to repair,
Like above, not a secret diver, daylight only, you can see better

Have pulled a lot of great stuff out of dumpsters. Amazing the stuff that people toss. One of the best ways to beat the high cost of boating!

An all-bronze Baby Blake. Am going to remove the bowl, fit a copper tube in its place, and make a table lamp for my study.
