Bermuda Boat Yard Recommendations

A friend will be limping into St Georges Harbour in four days (he contacted me by Sat phone) and will be needing some repairs.

Apparently his steering box has broken free of its mount in the steering compartment on his monohull and he cannot use either the autohelm or even the wheel, so is using the emergency steering mechanism.

So, any suggestions for a good boat yard that can provide some docking assistance and then remount the steering box on the bulkhead in the steering compartment? Probably just need some heavy screws into the wooden supports in the walls and then a good coat of fibreglass, but he wants "to be sure it is done correctly". Also, wants to be sure the steering box is mounted so there is no additional strain on the steering linkage and that the autohelm is working correctly, as something must have torn the steering box off its mount.

Any recs for a good boat yard?

Thanks

Re: Bermuda boat yard recommendations

Bob,

My suggestion is to tell your friend to check with Bermuda Yacht Services for their recommendations. They are in the green building on the south end of Ordnance Island that has the customs house on it. They are very helpful and will have local knowledge about repair people. There is a yard further into the St. Georges harbor, up past the fuel dock, on Wellington Slip Road but I do not know anything about it.

When your friend checks in with Bermuda Radio (required within 30 miles of the island) suggest that they inform the radio folks about their steering. They may send someone out to assist entering St. George harbor as the entrance is quite narrow.

I will be sailing up there myself in a couple of weeks.

Cheers

One of the members here, Blue Stocking, lives on Bermuda and has extensive boat repair and maintenance experience. He is honest and a helpful guy, but may not be looking to take on extra work. Send him a pm and I'm sure he will have recommendations.

Vic

Thanks!

Thanks for your quick response to my PM and your quick response to my friends at sea. Yes, they are very nice people!

Hope the steering is fixable, as I'm joining them at the end of the month for the hop to Annapolis.

Cheers

Bob

Hi Maurice,
Really good to hear from you. You and the rest of the Onions we met are part of the reason Bermuda is one of the best places Sandy and I have visited. We loved our time there. And the Goslings Black Seal of course

Glad you could help these folk. CF is an amazing family.

How is your brother, and Charlie?

Keep well.

Vic (and Sandy)
