Re: Trimaran - Especially Searunner - Owners

Cheers Phil, been here, just too busy with shore ballast to contribute much. I'm a bit envious of Roy and his Rolls Royce fit out but he deserves it. I'm constantly getting a couple things done in...

Re: Trimaran - Especially Searunner - Owners

Ok, Jim was probably inspired by ketches and schooners but for a Searunner the mule is a short hoist, long foot Genoa. Basically a equilateral triangle (almost) that goes on the forestay up to about...

Re: Trimaran - Especially Searunner - Owners

Mules look like a funny sail but they do work well in stronger winds. You get lots of power with less heeling, I played with one till it blew it up. That said, nothing beats the convenience of a...

Re: Buying older built trimarans

In regards to the effectiveness of your lateral plane in the context of your amateur build I'd suggest just making a new centerboard to the correct foil section. John is a good designer, I'd guess...

Re: Cheap Multis and Projects

Well there's check and there's checkmate. It is best to get to the roots of these mad impulses so you can learn to resist....

Re: Trimaran - Especially Searunner - Owners

Wow, a wood boat with no chance to look at it before bidding and this is a bargain how?

Re: Ever had this happen?

I just tell the dolphins they are charged if they ride to avoid the hitch hikers.

Re: Trimaran - Especially Searunner - Owners

Looks like a CC. Composite is more marketing friendly. CC actually takes knowledge to understand, plus then you would have to talk about wood.

Re: Trimaran - Especially Searunner - Owners

Wash and clean, DRY OUT, ping with hammers, press with screw driver, take core samples where necessary. Replace what is needed.. Often old leaves and residue will stain as well as water ingress.

Re: Trimaran - Especially Searunner - Owners

Thanks Phil, good suggestions. I think Will is right, it does look like a 34.
I like the one ama removal idea, I did see a Nicol modified so 1 wing and ama could be bolted on or off, putting the...

Re: Trimaran - Especially Searunner - Owners

Couple quick thoughts, on the draining pick the lowest spot (s) and drill a hole, say 3/4" dia., and coat the edges with epoxy, bigger is fine. Use a hole saw, this is a core sample and will, along...

Re: If Gunboats Can Have This, Why Canít I?

Looks good Phil. I'm inspired for a Fenger ketch style inverted wishbone for a backstay mizzen to supplement the pin top main in light wind. A light air modular square top to play with, I'll...

Re: If Gunboats Can Have This, Why Canít I?

I've used a double mainsheet, precise end boom control with a bit of effort. What I would up with is a centerline mainsheet with end boom preventers to the amas on my tri instead of a vang. Precise,...

Re: Trimaran - Especially Searunner - Owners

For the controls, etc.... the choices are of course over, under or through, if you are not familiar with OB installations you may want to consult. For sure sled attachments have to be secure in heavy...

Re: Trimaran - Especially Searunner - Owners

The Vagabond is probably about the mass of a SR 34. One 9.9 Yamaha high thrust can push it into 20 knots+ with corresponding seas. 2 of those would be plenty. Sleds add some weight though, I'd think...

Re: Trimaran - Especially Searunner - Owners

I don't know Roy, when cruising locally on a time frame putting the bits together as you go is part of the fun. I always get a lot done under way because I'm already there versus just trying to make...

Re: Cheap Multis and Projects

The 12 ton is a volume measurement used when a boat is documented etc.... not weight.

The tri in question looks like a Kismet which were Nicol takeoffs with different amas by a Canadian...

Re: Cheap Multis and Projects

Depends on condition of course, Jeff sounded like he wants more room.

Mantas were the pre Searunner Tri's by Jim Brown. He carried the logo over to the later range.

Re: Cheap Multis and Projects

That "Manta" is a Horstman Tristar. Good boats for room.

Re: Cheap Multis and Projects

Nope, that is the one, I haven't seen another Marples with square windows. Henderson Inlet?

If it is the same Cross Cat it showed up at Eastbay Marina around 20 years ago? Full of lumber and...

Re: Cheap Multis and Projects

I don't understand this question, if you are meeting the owners why wouldn't you be able to access the hatches?

Typically a wood boat should have airflow through the internal areas from bows to...

Re: Cheap Multis and Projects

Actually the thing that worries me are the nut cases prodding boats that aren't actually for sale, ha ha!

I've actually seen that Marples out for a sail within the last couple of years, really...

Re: Cheap Multis and Projects

A gentle reminder to the bargain hunters..... Do not board any vessel that is not listed.

Any boat grounded on tidelands is on private property and approaching it as well as boarding is trespass...

Re: Cheap Multis and Projects

CSK Foamy, I'd check it out if that was my coast. If the structure hasn't broken down it is worth it.
