Re: Fast cheap AIS using $20 rtl-sdr DVB-T SDR Dongles !

It's a while since I used this, but it's not hard to set up. Just connect an audio shielded cable - centre to the discriminator output (If I remember correctly it's maked 'E' on the PC board) and...

Re: Fast cheap AIS using $20 rtl-sdr DVB-T SDR Dongles !

Just for those interested in a cheap AIS receiver to experiment with that works pretty much straight from the box - I've had good success with a cheap Puxing 888 VHF handheld, about $70 from China,...

Re: HF SSB Ham Radio Option

In my experience (20yrs Ham and Marine licenses) the Icom 718's are very stable, however for around $70 you can add the CR-338 TXCO option and get 0.5ppm frequency stability ..I'd recommend that...

Re: Which Is Better ? Good-Used or Cheap-New VHF ?

Simple, buy a new one. Why? Any ten year old radio will have old capacitors, old resistors, old IC's and old switches. Even if never used electronic components age, particularly capacitors and can...

Re: Convert Internal Antenna to External

The manual shows there is a way to configure the NMEA sentences for output, but doesn't show any input sentence selections. Given that NMEA input of fix data would probably be in conflict with the...

Re: HF SSB Ham Radio Option

An interesting little fact --the Icom 718 ham radio has a twin, the Icom 78 which is sold in many markets (not the US, it's 'export only' there ) as a full marine radio meeting marine radio...

Re: Convert Internal Antenna to External -Solved!

A simple way to effectively achieve the same result as an external antenna if the internal one doesn't work satisfactorily is a GPS signal repeater as here:Pc-Mobile data cables audio adapters for...

Re: GPS Dropping Out

it's not quite that simple for some, and the problem does appear to be specific to OpenCPN in some circumstances. It's not just a 'cable' issue, some GPS units have inbuilt Prolific serial to USB...

Re: GPS Dropping Out

It may or may not help find the issue but I haven't seen the problem on any of about four different laptops running XP or Win7 where the GPS with an in-built Prolific converter was being run through...

Re: Android Development Underway

Please excuse the ignorance but I'm not sure I understand the SD card issue. With most Android devices quite capable of handling 16 or 32gb SDHC cards surely it's not a problem to store whatever...

Re: Use an Existing Marine VHF for AIS

Yes, it's simply a matter of soldering an audio lead to the discriminator output and ground. It was a Puxing PX777. From memory the discriminator output is marked 'e' on the main PCB -but I may have...

Re: GPS Dropping Out

I too have seen the same problem of GPS dropping out using a 'mouse' gps with an inbuilt Prolific converter and WIN 7, it's most frustrating to say the least. The GPS still has power, and the...

Re: Use an Existing Marine VHF for AIS

I used a cheap Puxing handheld VHF transceiver for an AIS receiver...about $50 on eBay...the discriminator output was even marked clearly on the main PCB and it worked fine as a cheap experiment....

Re: OpenCPN On Tablet Computer

No, it doesn't cause any problems with other devices, it just blocks plug and lay detection on the com port number you select.

Re: Android Development Underway

Any plans for CM93 support? That would be awesome, as it's often the only easily available chart source and I've been dying to have CM93 on a handheld for years since the first PDA's came out.
