Re: Fast cheap AIS using $20 rtl-sdr DVB-T SDR Dongles !
It's a while since I used this, but it's not hard to set up. Just connect an audio shielded cable - centre to the discriminator output (If I remember correctly it's maked 'E' on the PC board) and...

Re: Fast cheap AIS using $20 rtl-sdr DVB-T SDR Dongles !
Just for those interested in a cheap AIS receiver to experiment with that works pretty much straight from the box - I've had good success with a cheap Puxing 888 VHF handheld, about $70 from China,...

Re: HF SSB Ham Radio Option
In my experience (20yrs Ham and Marine licenses) the Icom 718's are very stable, however for around $70 you can add the CR-338 TXCO option and get 0.5ppm frequency stability ..I'd recommend that...

Re: Which Is Better ? Good-Used or Cheap-New VHF ?
Simple, buy a new one. Why? Any ten year old radio will have old capacitors, old resistors, old IC's and old switches. Even if never used electronic components age, particularly capacitors and can...

Re: Convert Internal Antenna to External
The manual shows there is a way to configure the NMEA sentences for output, but doesn't show any input sentence selections. Given that NMEA input of fix data would probably be in conflict with the...

Re: HF SSB Ham Radio Option
An interesting little fact --the Icom 718 ham radio has a twin, the Icom 78 which is sold in many markets (not the US, it's 'export only' there ) as a full marine radio meeting marine radio...

it's not quite that simple for some, and the problem does appear to be specific to OpenCPN in some circumstances. It's not just a 'cable' issue, some GPS units have inbuilt Prolific serial to USB...

Yes, it's simply a matter of soldering an audio lead to the discriminator output and ground. It was a Puxing PX777. From memory the discriminator output is marked 'e' on the main PCB -but I may have...
