Re: STARLINK pre-order
Here was a pretty good article on why Starlink isn’t quite ready for us yet: https://seabits.com/starlink-is-not-ready-for-your-boat-yet/
Should also be mentioned that the antenna appears to...

Re: Replacing Floor boards in the Salon
Smaller boat, but we went with CNCd plywood covered with some industrial carpet (the carpet is cheap and lasts about two seasons).
There’s even a video since the floor was a test run for a new CNC...

Re: Where Should Cruisers Live?
It used to be Helsinki (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helsingin_pit%C3%A4j%C3%A4n_kirkonkyl%C3%A4) way back when. The “rural municipality of Helsinki” was renamed Vantaa later when they didn’t want...

Re: Where Should Cruisers Live?
There’s not much left, but medieval Helsinki (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Church_of_St._Lawrence,_Vantaa) was more north inland of where the city is now.

Re: Where Should Cruisers Live?
I ended up sleeping on board for a week on the hard a while back. Having a chemical toilet (we have a about-50€ Porta Potti) made a huge difference there.
Of course if the boat had a composting...

Re: TYPE-C and USB system for office electronics
At least for us the problem is that we need to power two of these for a full workday. Taking a break to swim and charge the laptop would be nice, but doesn’t work on a Zoom-heavy meeting day for...

Re: TYPE-C and USB system for office electronics
Looking at the pictures, those are 1A@5VDC USB ports, so 5W. Falls quite a bit short from the about 85W the MacBook chargers put out.
Our LiFePo4 battery also has some USB outlets, but I don’t see...

Re: TYPE-C and USB system for office electronics
Yep, I’d much rather have USB-C sockets in the wall directly. We added some 2A USB sockets next to each bunk last summer and that was a huge quality of life improvement. But that’s obviously not...

Re: TYPE-C and USB system for office electronics
I meant between the boat battery and the 12V outlet. But yes, good point also about making sure the breaker is adequate.

Re: TYPE-C and USB system for office electronics
That looks pretty similar to what I had in my Amazon wish list waiting for the ice to melt and the season to start.
But 10A draw means one should use pretty thick wires between the 12V plug and...

Re: Cheap digital weather stations on boats.
I have one of those sensors connected to the Raspberry Pi running Signal K. This is the “ship’s barometer”.
However, on top of that I have six Ruuvi tags around the boat. These are nice little...

Re: TYPE-C and USB system for office electronics
That’s a good question, I’m also looking for a solution. Maybe a car charger plugged to a 12V cigarette lighter socket would do it?
We worked on board whole last summer, but mostly on shore power....

We ordered a 150Ah LiFePo4 from AliExpress a bit over a month ago. Looks like it is arriving next week. I can post some impressions when we get it on board
