Re: Navionics plus versus Navionics Gold XL

Yeah the new Platinum+ requires you to load the charts before you plug into the chartplotter. In the US, they just came out with some (Navionics+ Regions) that come pre-loaded but that doesn't help...

Re: Navionics on Acer Laptop problems...

Ooo yeah, the webapp is not super helpful if you don't have internet, haha. I think iNavX has a windows version and you can download Navionics charts through that -- might be worth looking into.

Re: Navionics on Acer Laptop problems...

Website says they removed the Windows app back in 2015. Not a complete substitute, but the WebApp has a lot of the same functionality as the phone/tablet based apps now: Navionics Webapp...

Re: Boat storage in San Diego

Thanks all -- yeah I know space in SD is increasingly non-existent. Boats already on a trailer so that part is good to go. I live in a townhouse though so keeping the boat at my place is a no go. I...

Boat storage in San Diego

I'm looking at buying a new boat -- trailerable with a 5.5ft draft. Right now I'm a member at MBYC but I'm not sure the dock hoist is tall enough to keep the boat on the hard and lift it in when I...

Re: xxx vs Garmin Charts

Maybe someone will take some sonar logs of the area to help update the charts, haha! I've heard quality between different chart plotters with Navionics charts can be varied. I've used them on...

Re: Raymarine Dragonfly 5 Pro

I just got an email from Navionics and it made me think of this post -- the email talked about a new product called 'Navionics+ Regions'. It looks like it's the same charts, but everything comes...

Re: Chartering in the Caribbean

The BVIs are supposed to be a really nice place for a first charter (not sure if you guys have chartered in the past). Good line of sight navigation and consistent but not too strong of winds. I've...

Re: 6-Pack vs Masters?

Thanks for the replies everyone, this has been really helpful. Having my license would mean I can coach different/more courses at the sailing school I teach at part time and I'd also like to skipper...

Re: 6-Pack vs Masters?

I'm based in San Diego and there's a school called Maritime Institute that I've heard is the way to go out here. I haven't made contact with them yet to go through the process, etc. but I'll...

6-Pack vs Masters?

I've been toying with the idea of going for my captain's license. I understand what each license will allow me to do after I've gotten it but my question is...it appears that the requirements and...

Re: Raymarine Dragonfly 5 Pro

I can't comment on CMAP but I've used Navionics charts quite a bit and really like them. They give you the option of running the SonarCharts in addition to the standard Navionics charts. The...

Re: Raymarine and Navionics Partnership

My guess is that the connection between the app on your phone or tablet and your plotter is something like a near field communication (NFC) connection -- it will push known data from the source over...

Re: Navionics Plus - new format sucks

Just curious -- did you get the Navionics Updates card? I got some info in an promo email from Navionics that the Platinum cards come pre-loaded with the SonarCharts, so it seems like you wouldn't...

Re: Hoving To

I'd be interested to hear why he thinks this. Heaving to is really helpful when you're shorthanded sailing and need to make a repair at sea. We also teach is in all of the Learn to Sail courses at...

Re: Navionics Dock-to-Dock Autorouting

I believe the auto-routing feature on the app is straight line courses, since it's a blanket algorithm for all types of boats (motor and sail). The only adjustable input is the draft of your vessel....

Re: Navionics Dock-to-Dock Autorouting

It seems like, aside from just leaving or coming into the dock, it tries to route you along marked channels even if your draft is low enough to cut across somewhere. They've got to be sure to route...

Re: Navionics Dock-to-Dock Autorouting

The autorouting feature is pretty new but seems to be similar to what you describe for the flight planning software. The routing is set based on the draft you assign (rather than weather) so it will...

Re: First time leaving the LI Sound headed to Newport

I live on the west coast now, but have sailed out of the LIS more times than I can count during block island and vineyard races. Timing the Race will likely be the biggest worry, but since you're...

Re: Navionics Charts

I've only seen Navionics used with Fugawi for PC route planning -- they have a few different tiers of software, but the issue is that Fugawi software isn't free... :-(

Hopefully a plugin for...

Re: Tide app

Were you thinking of Shralp Tide?

If not, a good alternative is Ayetides but it costs about $8 in the itunes store. It's been great for me but I'm not sure what the Nova Scotia station coverage...

Re: Transferring routes from iNavX to Navionics

Yeah, I don't think there's a way to do a mass import of waypoints. For a while I was a little baffled that there wasn't a way to be able to import exact waypoints since I thought you could only tap...
