Re: How to be a boat owner

Having just done exactly what the OP is asking - yes it is possible, yes it is a good idea but there is a lot to learn and skills to master. I have been on the sea all my life, an ex Royal Navy...

Re: Cheapest SSB setup

Just a line as I started this.
I got a new Tecsun, checked it out and put it away for a couple of months while I sorted other things. Took it out and it now does not work.
Went for Garmin...

Re: Travelling through chart areas

Re: Cheapest SSB setup

The boat 12v system is all connected, how about direct to battery negative? I was thinking ground should be direct to sea. No reason except a feeling. . . .
The engine is directly adjacent so can...

Re: Cheapest SSB setup

So the earlier advice to just connect to a chain plate, and so (I guess) utilize ALL the rigging is good?
The ground that you suggest trying - can you elaborate a little on the physical setup?

Re: Is Alberg the best production designer ever?

My spoonful. I chose a Colvic 27 for my first boat, also a long keel, narrower than modern boats, 40 something years old and sound and healthy. I am waiting to set off for long trip as soon as it is...

Re: Cheapest SSB setup

Hi again. I have been thinking about your post here. Other sources seem to suggest that these issues are Why a specific antennae is a good idea. A length that is specifically geared to the...

Re: Cheapest SSB setup

Yes, I am aware of this but I have no requirement for anything except weather fax. At this point I am quite happy with the Tucson 880 and laptop and probably a tablet setup. Any chatting can wait...

Re: Cheapest SSB setup

Yes, I had a look at these as you suggested but I don't need communication as such, just a pressure chart. At this point I do not intend long ocean crossings, just cut a few ocean corners maybe, and...

Re: Cheapest SSB setup

Hi, I generally go the cheapest option but buy the best or new within that, a new 880 is still very economical.
