Re: Catamaran vs Monohull Crew Safety

Leave it to marketing people...
There is no question that the Outremer 5x is a great catamaran (I hope it has high enough bridgedeck clearance). Compared to the Amel 50, the Outremer 5x is twice as...

Re: Catamaran vs Monohull Crew Safety

The Amel 50 is a heavy cruising boat built for comfort. The 2012 Outremer is a light performance catamaran. Their focus is not the same.

Re: Catamaran vs Monohull Crew Safety

I agree.
There is a market for a modern quality built catamaran in the 45ft range.

I thought that the Benetau group would give it a shot with the new Excess product line, but it is just a racier...

Re: Catamaran vs Monohull Crew Safety

It is really hard to find and compare a monohull and an equivalent (in quality, weight, interior/exterior volume, performance, etc.) catamaran...

I've sailed a (long term cruise loaded) Lagoon 450...

Re: Catamaran vs Monohull Crew Safety

I agree. I'm not against catamarans. I'm just saying that it's harder to make a catamaran stiff, beam-wise, as it's much wider.
Maybe the Antares 44 doesn't creak as much as furniture is glassed on...

Re: Catamaran vs Monohull Crew Safety

Catamarans are very wide and it's very hard to make them solid (not flexible). I believe they all tend to creak, just like the average quality monohulls.

Riggers have told me that one cannot get...

Re: Catamaran vs Monohull Crew Safety

I found this true also.
I spent some time on a Super Maramu and I found it much more rolly than my Amel 50.

Re: Catamaran vs Monohull Crew Safety

I just watched the video below of a Lagoon catamaran in a storm. It gives a little idea of how it is inside one in rough conditions. It is difficult to get a real sense of it without the...

Re: Catamaran vs Monohull Crew Safety

It is VERY difficult, to capsize a cruising catamaran. It is probably more difficult than getting knocked down on a monohull. The captain has to make a lot of mistakes to reach that point of failure....
