Re: Paradoxical Lee Helm Puzzle

Another learning from this relates to the point someone raised about the (lifting) keel stalling.

It was a source of some surprise and joy to me that this boat was so docile (except in the OP...

You make an interesting point about the lee shore. Prior to this formative experience, I would always stay close to the leeward side, when sailing through narrow harbour moles in tender...

Re: Paradoxical Lee Helm Puzzle

OK: Here's the kicker: refer diagram below (by now there's just about smoke pouring out my poor little laptop's CPU fan outlet). I've added in the elephant in the room (or at least, I think so ) -...

Nice post !

;) (regarding 40 deg heel): in my defence: I did say in the OP that the boat was tender, the rig was tall, and it was blowing hard enough to remove the crests off the...

Re: Paradoxical Lee Helm Puzzle

I became further inclined to be skeptical about the textbook explanation when I first encountered really heavy winds on a sailboat. Provided the breeze was constant, the helm often balanced best with...

Re: Paradoxical Lee Helm Puzzle

I feel the need to provide a diagramatic framework here, partly to be able to discuss the theories others have floated, and partly to hang my own theory on.

Firstly I want to address the textbook...

Re: Paradoxical Lee Helm Puzzle

In the hope of putting this red herring to bed, here's a typical photo of the same syndrome. Photos create the misleading illusion that this is a steady-state condition, as if they showed a constant...

Re: Paradoxical Lee Helm Puzzle

Seems to me there are two animals in this room, a red herring and an elephant.

I'll address the red herring in this post:

I'm referring to the photo of a boat rolling heavily while sailing...

Re: Paradoxical Lee Helm Puzzle

Original post excerpt:

"You're close reaching in strong conditions....There's a bit of a tendency to round up – as you'd expect – but it's not unmanageable if you feather the sail... "

I...

Re: Paradoxical Lee Helm Puzzle

Well, it seems to me all the ingredients are now in the pot for the solution I came up with. Anyone see a way of combining them which is plausible? I'm not saying mine's conclusive: if you can come...

Re: Paradoxical Lee Helm Puzzle

Anyone else care to come up with an alternative explanation, or to toss around ideas on the ones already suggested?

Paradoxical Lee Helm Puzzle

Here's a mindbending brainteaser: (at least, it bent my mind, the one time it happened to me)

You're close reaching in strong conditions, in waters sheltered from the open sea. It's a reasonably...
