Re: Capsize Ratio's

cywyckham:

I agree that the pressure vessel model is not really appropriate and that buckling or some other mode of failure in an edge supported panel is the right model.

But just as a simple...

Re: Capsize Ratio's

Yes, way off 'Capsize Ratios,' which, I think we all agree, are relatively uselessly simplistic.

On the wave vs. wind causing capsizes -- seems to me that where modern designs get into trouble...

Re: Capsize Ratio's

If you google "pogo sailboat" you get this web-site:

www.minitransat650.com/html/pogo_sailboat.html

It contains these quotes from the builders literature:

"The Pogo is a racing and cruising...

Polux:

Read the latest Cruising World, Sail, or anything and you will find that the three boats (out of 6) finishing the latest leg on the decks of steamers are BROKEN. They are not avoiding...

Re: Capsize Ratio's

Seems kind of quiet out there now that 8 people have died off the California coast, half the Volvo OR fleet has crashed and is 'racing' to South Africa on the decks of tramp steamers, the Coast Guard...

Re: Capsize Ratio's

Ok, let's not quibble over AVS of 160 vs. 180 degrees. My point is that boats with numbers like this are a far cry from the pointy scows or skiffs of today, like the Volvo 60 and the "bendy toys"...

Re: Capsize Ratio's

steventuf -- the inflated tender lashed to your foredeck will not probably not even get wet until you are at an angle of heel of nearly 90 degrees, ie. spreaders in the waves. I do not know your...

Re: Capsize Ratio's

One more thing, Barnakiel, If a boat encounters a wave big enough to roll her, she will likely encounter another to roll her back ...? Yep, quite true, but ... when? In the Fastnet, most of the...

Re: Capsize Ratio's

Barnakiel:

You are quite correct about the old ships -- some even capsized on launching. Was it the 'Wasa?"

As to finding a sailboat with a fully positive righting curve, you are quite correct...

Re: Capsize Ratio's

In my admittedly old-fashioned opinion, a proper sea-going vessel should have a righting moment vs angle curve which is POSITIVE always. (I would make exception for catamarans of good design, and...
