Why does it make things look funny? No one seems particularly interested in anything other than blathering. The PJs saying that they had to manually pump twice a day is seen as a grave inconsistency...

If I have to call out a rescue unit to evacuate a crew member, I am probably going to be thinking "Would I set out in this vessel in this condition?" rather than "Is this vessel in bad enough shape...

Actually, what the blog says is that they had three days from the time they pushed the EPIRB until the Vandegrift arrived - the PJ's probably asked them to turn it on to serve as a homing beacon.

The boat did not actually lose steering (well, not before they removed the wheel, anyway). That was mis-reporting.

Where have you seen that? All I see are comments claiming that "twice a day" and "every few hours" are grossly incompatible versions of the story, rather than normal variations.

I don't think anyone is going to go out and buy a boat because of this. At best, the general pubic will learn enough to stop harassing their relatives who choose to live aboard and/or cruise.
