Re: Hunter sinks at Catalina due to bow cleat failure

You're being way too hard on the Hunter, maybe even close to "Hunter bashing." I'll post a picture of the mooring cleat on our 53ft boat so that you can see for yourself. Smackdaddy is right, the...

Re: Hunter sinks at Catalina due to bow cleat failure

We do the same and have had no problems. Dual snubber bridle run through both anchor rollers with chaffe gear, then run to both forward deck mooring cleats. Otherwise, the bow would get chewed up...

Re: Hunter sinks at Catalina due to bow cleat failure

I lived in Southern California for over 30 years, not far from where this happened in Huntington Beach and Long Beach. The forecasts for Santa Ana winds can be quite fickle. Sometimes when they're...

Re: Hunter sinks at Catalina due to bow cleat failure

You really need to quit taking statements out of context and fabricating stuff to support your lame arguments. The only time I was hit by 50 knot winds aboard my Hunter 450 was when I was anchored...

Re: Hunter sinks at Catalina due to bow cleat failure

Sailorboy,

Getting hit at an anchorage by unexpected 50-60 mile per hour winds is not that unusual when out cruising. Sometimes, there's no place to go when the unexpected wind or thunderstorm...

Re: Hunter sinks at Catalina due to bow cleat failure

That idea doesn't work so well on a deck stepped mast. A snubber along with a bridle and two deck cleat connection points works well.

Re: Hunter sinks at Catalina due to bow cleat failure

I agree with you 100%. Living here in New England, You know as well as I do that weather comes ripping through here which doesn't agree with what was forecast just a short time earlier. ...

Re: Hunter sinks at Catalina due to bow cleat failure

Some of the armchair Google self anointed sailing experts seem to believe that if they watch the weather forecast and always anchor where the weather is nice or in a harbor, that they... as prudent...

Re: Hunter sinks at Catalina due to bow cleat failure

Impressive... you must have wasted a couple of hours digging up my quotes from past threads, and then cutting them up and taking them out of context so they'd fit your agenda. Who's the one that's...

Re: Hunter sinks at Catalina due to bow cleat failure

In the photo, the floundering Hunter is surrounded by older powerboats which are still afloat. No agenda.... just sighting the obvious

Re: Hunter sinks at Catalina due to bow cleat failure

That really looks bad for Hunter when a newish Hunter sinks at it's mooring because of a cleat used to secure it breaks out.... especially bad when you consider that the surrounding much older power...

Re: Hunter sinks at Catalina due to bow cleat failure

I believe I brought some "factual information" and "actual hands-on experience" to the forum during a recent anchor thread regarding anchoring in LA harbor during a two day Santa Ana wind storm just...
