Re: Paper Charts Now Unnecessary

This sort of thing I find fascinating and I think is a function of how the brain seems to work. I get it driving, if tomtom or whatever is there in front of me then all the usual more zoomed out...

Re: Paper Charts Now Unnecessary

But sitting in a bar up a muddy river in Brazil with a bunch of ocean crossing cruisers this topic came up... and not one of us knew what the local...

Re: Paper Charts Now Unnecessary

Almost no small boat regulation in the UK.

Re: Paper Charts Now Unnecessary

A lot can be done with some small scale charts and pilots guide. UK to Gib is easy with a few charts and something like the cruising association almanac which has chartlets of all the harbours or...

Re: Paper Charts Now Unnecessary

Most sailing crossroads will have a backstreet print shop with a pile of charts of various ages to copy. Lots of the world it there just isnīt anywhere to buy charts, which is where having an A4...

Re: Paper charts now unnessary

Interesting. Wonder how it does that. I always thought that chartplotter data was the same data as paper charts anyway, nothing new. Maybe it does some funky interpolating. Doubt I'll ever be able to...

Re: Paper charts now unnessary

Slight drift but related. Being a more, err, frugal sailor, cm93 and opencpn form the electronic side of things.
So do the higher end charting system have tidal stream data included? I can get...

Re: Paper charts now unnessary

But do they?

Does anyone here sail with no chart info on paper at all? Pilot book/cruising guide has enough info to get in somewhere in so does anyone here sail with no paper at all?

Re: Paper charts now unnessary

I had some large scale harbour A4 paper printouts as a backup for cruising south america, not much chance of getting any charts in most places down there. They tend to degrade a little after a few...

Re: Paper charts now unnessary

i found messing around with sextant sights on maxsea took only a very short time to get used to, didn't take long for the process to be faster than on paper. Plus you can save everything so it...
