Re: Topping Lift - Mainsail Trim - Light winds...

Monte - I think you're right - Very likely most of the answer is how far aft the shrouds are. If you're still near that 471 you could probably eye-ball any difference compared to your boat. My...

Re: Topping Lift - Mainsail Trim - Light winds...

Hi Monte - beam or broard reach in 20K TWS? For us this would bring the AWA to beam or close reach and we'd have a reef in the main for helm balance. We have dual mainsheets and no traveler, but...

Re: Topping Lift - Mainsail Trim - Light winds...

Of course sailing the polars to get the best VMG downwind is faster - if the polars support it. I contend that realistic polars for the vast majority of cruising cats won't support gybing downwind...

I should have added, that with regards to cruising cats, it sounds as if you don't disagree with anything. So what exactly do you "totally disagree" with?

Re: Topping Lift - Mainsail Trim - Light winds...

Educate myself? Demeaning comments like that are inappropriate and not conducive to discussion.

The "heaviest displacements monohulls" you raced must have been able to substantially exceed their...

Re: Topping Lift - Mainsail Trim - Light winds...

I think you're wrong here. Only very light weight boats can benefit from angles downwind vs dead down wind. And certainly not cruising boats. It takes a lot of boat speed to turn the wind to gain...

Re: Topping Lift - Mainsail Trim - Light winds...

Answer to what? If you seriously think your Lagoon 400 can make better VMG gybing downwind vs dead downwind, I invite you to find a race with any other 400 and bet a case of rum as the prize....

Re: Topping Lift - Mainsail Trim - Light winds...

Yes, for sure on your Nacra, but not on your Lagoon....

There are very few cruising cats that can gybe downwind and make better VMG than dead down wind. There is no shame here - the vast majority...

Re: Topping Lift - Mainsail Trim - Light winds...

Roger that. Even further to the point, with a socking spi, it sure helps to be able to hide it behind the main to get it socked. To this end, I have raised the main to the second reef when planning...

Re: Topping Lift - Mainsail Trim - Light winds...

Maybe better to blame it on rum? that's usually my story and I'm sticking to it....

Re: Topping Lift - Mainsail Trim - Light winds...

This is commonly repeated and may be supported by certain manufacturer's advice (including Lagoon) never to sail a spi w/o the main. But it seems to me that whatever "support" a loosely or tightly...

Re: Topping Lift - Mainsail Trim - Light winds...

Good on ya, 2wind.

A question of curiosity:

85 m2? Best I can find, the typical 440 sail on the tall rig (70.25ft/21.4m) is 74 m2. And 8 battens? Wow. Do you have an even taller rig? -...
