Well, taking into account the vastness of the ocean, it's still empty. What's the probability of getting on of those ships within a mile from you? Or within few hundred yards? Near to non.

Don't know for sure but I doubt that. Their main reason to have a transponder on board is for security - to be seen by ships.

On the other hand, as an additional feature you get for free, S-AIS is...

+1 for DeLorme InReach. Has been tracking us flawlessly for a bit more than a year now with 10' step for a 25$ per month.

You can't call Satellite AIS a tracking really. Just looked up a boat I...
