Salty Dawg looks like a bunch of fun, however to run a Rally from one foreign country to another over an Ocean does cost large, from what we have seen over the last 3 years of our planning attracts...

Don't think the discussion is having a go at the guys at all, i see the discussion more about HOW anyone can helm a disabled boat, there's no textbook like experience and these people just got a huge...

When people who haven't had that happen state that a skipper should have been able to steer the boat (because they read it in a textbook) it irks me.

As i said there are other ways, yeas depends on conditions, yes depends on type of rudder arrangement, all is hypothetical.

Vendee contestants are intrepid sailors.

Drag on one side can help,...

Design, where does it stop and where does it begin? Every man made thing will break, nature is the great equaliser.

A skeg or end of keel mounted rudder is only as strong as the bottom bearing...

Cheechako.
It has to be a design weakness or a collision to fail otherwise no problems, vulnerable yes BUT there are other ways of steering for f'sake!

Not your worry then BUT a lot of people evaluate the benefits and join up, CF members on this years ARC have done very well, maybe you do your sailing alone and privately well good for you!

Agree totally David, all to often someone does a fantastic deed only to be rewarded with a loss, this Harbourmaster's name should be spread far and wide as a humane being, how many others would have...

Realistically once on ANY ocean you are on your own,expect nothing from anyone, no one can demand or depend on SOMEONE coming to the rescue.

This is the problem with society ALWAYS people want to...
