We were good until we sucked an octopus into the head. It got up around the top of the bowl and would not come out without the use of a shop vac!!!! The wife required a strainer after that incident ...

I just figure a 15-20 dollar item that is readily accessible.
To me it is a KISS kinda thing. I have had octopus in the head then installed the strainer and no problems.

I hate to ask a stupid question, but why not use an in-line filter and not mess with the thru hull fitting at all
