Re: Drinking Water from watertanks

Love the rain catcher Wing. I keep planning to make something, but haven’t faced the need yet. You may inspire…

We do use rainwater for showers or other cleaning needs on board. This we catch in...

Re: Drinking Water from watertanks

Agreed. Start clean, and use it. Don't let it sit for long periods, and you'll be fine.

Most of us are blessed with superb municipal water. If you use this, and do basic maintenance on your...

Re: Drinking Water from watertanks

If it works for you, then great. but living aboard and cruising off the dock for long periods are quite different things. There’s no way I could carry enough water in jugs for my cruising. But even...

Re: Drinking Water from watertanks

Makes sense for day sailing, but not for any serious duration. We use our tank water for everything, including direct-from-the-tap drinking. Just clean the tank and fill with good water. If in doubt,...

Drinking Water from watertanks

Yes… sorry. I thought the question was about shocking. This is a high-concentration, but short exposure treatment. It’s definitely not meant as a maintenance thing.

We shock our water system at...

Re: Drinking Water from watertanks

Hi Paul. We more-or-less follow Peggy Hall's recommendation: ~1 quart bleach/50 gal water tank capacity

We let it sit for 6 to 12 hrs.

Opps... I see Paul's question was some time ago....

Re: Drinking Water

Ah yes, just shows there’s always exceptions .

But of course the Flint situation wasn’t an issue with biological contaminants, nor with the amount of chlorine used. It had to do with lead...

Re: Drinking Water from watertanks

No disagreement here. As I said, I use a carbon filter on our system, and so far I have never added chlorine to our tanks. I do go through a cleansing (shock) process at the beginning of each season...

Re: Drinking Water from watertanks

Strikes me that the potential problems of ingesting very low levels of chlorine are easily balanced against the very severe impacts of untreated water. Contaminated water kills more people around the...

Re: Drinking Water from watertanks

So… maybe through shear ignorance I’ve been doing the right thing? We definitely use antifreeze in the system. And it is notoriously hard to get it all out in the spring. I wish there was a better...

Re: Drinking Water from watertanks

Thank you. I'm no expert on this (or anything really). I've followed the advice of those who seem to be. So I appreciate your expertise on this.

Yes, it does take a few flushings to clear the...

Re: Drinking Water from watertanks

So, what’s your ratio for shocking? I’m not here to defend or insult. I’m just sharing information.

Re: Drinking Water from watertanks

This comes from the queen of yacht sanitation systems. It has worked for us so far, but I’m not a chemist, so can’t say whether a lesser amount would be as effective.

Re: Drinking Water from watertanks

Basically we follow Peggy Hall’s advice: "1 cup (8 oz) of household bleach per 10 gallon.” We do this at the start of every season. It has kept our tank clean and tasting fine.

Searoom I For the...

Re: Drinking Water from watertanks

Thanks for the chart. We tend to follow Peggy’s formula for shocking. To be honest, I almost never have to add chlorine to the system since most of the places we fill from are municipal sources that...

Re: Drinking Water from watertanks

I’m in the “not sure what problem you’re trying to solve” group. We always drink our tank water. Source from clean places. Take some basic steps to avoid introducing junk. Shock the tank once a year....
