Re: Changing Old School Sail Plan

The Bristol 27 is only 8' wide so has a better righting moment than most boats with the ballast it has.

Capsize screening formula is 1.71 which is better than the Contessa 32. (haven't figure the...

Re: Changing Old School Sail Plan

Thanks for the suggestion. I've thought about that or a Corsair, but I think at my age the Bristol 27 or similar monohull 29'-34' is fine. Especially for the type cruising I'm doing now and will be...

Re: Changing Old School Sail Plan

The photos were a part of my earlier point/posts about the changes in mainsails.

That over the years you can see a progressive change toward the higher aspect ratio evolve.

Photos demonstrates...

Re: Changing Old School Sail Plan

Thanks for that info.

And it makes sense especially since when racing the first leg is usually upwind and it's very important to win that leg or be close to the front so efficiency upwind is very...

Re: Changing Old School Sail Plan

Why not maybe you will learn a few things along the way.

Just found these old race photos of me on my boat.

I got second here and you can see how close the racing used to be at times.

Found...

Re: Changing Old School Sail Plan

You might be right.

I just found a picture of me racing my boat early 2000's! Crazy while doing a search for Nacra I17R. (Pensacola Bay)

Looks pretty sporty and I haven't rounded the upwind...

Re: Changing Old School Sail Plan

Speaking of that, my last beach cat was a Nacra I17R (precursor to today's Nacra F-17) which had a carbon fiber mast of about 30' and square top Technora mainsail with a very high aspect ratio as did...

Re: Changing Old School Sail Plan

So as I suspected it appears the newer the boat the more high aspect ratio the mainsail seems to have.

Someone in a post above mentioned my knowledge of beach cats since I raced them for so long...

Re: Changing Old School Sail Plan

Yeah, so it will mainly depend on if I see something close (main sail) I can make work like the guy did in the photo with the Catalina sail

Plus I like those full (luff to leech) battens.

I...

Re: Changing Old School Sail Plan

Yeah but again it wasn't about making a gain it was about the main's foot looking a bit out of proportion a few times in pictures.

Many old school boats had these long booms so I was thinking...

Re: Changing Old School Sail Plan

I'm thinking it won't make much difference either way with a slightly shorter foot and slightly longer luff than I have now so if one becomes available again at Bacon Sail for a decent price like the...

Re: Changing Old School Sail Plan

Thanks Jim, but I was looking at the word "problem" in a different way than you are using it.

Light air to me isn't a problem because the sailing is easy on the boat and on the skipper (and crew...

Re: Changing Old School Sail Plan

The problem is never adding sail unless you are in a hurry, and if you have bought a cruising monohull or cat, you are never in a hurry because they are very slow boats.

No, the problem offshore...

Re: Changing Old School Sail Plan

It was a bargain then but to cruise it more than a week will take some adjustment for me since I'm used to AC, queen size bed, fresh food, and all that city living provides. (which would include...

Re: Changing Old School Sail Plan

Yeah, I had switched from racing to cycling in 2006 after racing since 1992 or so on high speed beach cats. High speed back then.

After 10,000 -12,000 miles cycling and having to relocate after...

Re: Changing Old School Sail Plan

Sure it's too short.

Sailmaker went with sailboatdata.com with luff of 25.5' even though he came out and took measurements whereas the proper luff is 28'

There was some confusion maybe so I...

Re: Changing Old School Sail Plan

I don’t feel any weather helm as most all steering is done by the autopilot once I’m undocked and out the fairway into the creek.

My last 2 racing boats had high aspect ratio sails, rudders, and...

Re: Changing Old School Sail Plan

My battens never hit the backstay so when the breeze is light I can have the boom higher.

One this day, I probably just raised the main too high which pulled the boom up too much and I just...

Re: Changing Old School Sail Plan

I've completed so many drifter races even 100 milers on beach cats that I have no problem with this new light air method I discovered once I bought this old monohull and a reliable engine that sips...

Re: Changing Old School Sail Plan

Could be that. Or that my last high tech racing beach cats had the hi-aspect ratio mains and I got used to the look.

I was looking into getting another set of reef points but since the sail will...

Re: Changing Old School Sail Plan

Thanks for the input but maybe I didn't explain this correctly.

I don't have a weather helm issue.

My sail is still good. I just think the foot is extraordinary long.

As far as light air, I...

Re: Changing Old School Sail Plan

Btw, thanks for all the inputs.

It helps me to get a better picture of the over all effect of a small change.

My last beach cat that I raced was for single handers but also had a spinnaker.

Re: Changing Old School Sail Plan

Right.

He mentioned adding a bowsprit. No way!

The weather helm isn't that big of a deal but the boom does seem monstrous.

And as I have mentioned many other boats of this type have...

Re: Changing Old School Sail Plan

Glad it worked out for you.

I won't be shortening the boom though or adding roach, but may just buy a sail with a bit shorter foot.

After noticing boats with mains like this, I also saw for...

Re: Changing Old School Sail Plan

I'm actually not trying to improve the sailing performance. I'm no nautical engineer but that super long foot sometime simply appears out of whack with the rest of the sail plan.

Also as I've...
