And those stats don't refer just to the USCG, but to the whole system. Believe it or not there is a world outside the U.S.

A lot of those people would have been rescued by other means in the past.

:thumb: Yeah, I initially typed 30 000 as that's what I thought I'd read, but then couldn't find the link if it was challenged, so went with the 2009 stats.

either way, it's a lot of souls.

Yep :thumb: and so do the stats. Over 20 000 people saved (up to 2009) since the Copsas-Sarsat system installed.

An epirb will 'transmit' for 48 hours as per the standard. A vhf in a rescue situation is useless unless it's transmitting and it can't transmit for very long at all. I'd take a guess at 20 minutes. ...

If you know exactly where you are, yes. And as long as you can stay where you know you are and convey that to those ships, with the limited battery you have to 'transmit'. Which I'm sure you know...

If he got rolled, the a vhf wouldn't have been a lot of use.

Loose your antenna? Your radio gets soaked? Not a lot of use then.

Just for interests I thought I might put this up.

And please note: in Australian waters the phone number to call is 000, not 911. I point that out as thousands of children growing up in the 70's...

You might keep in mind when your complaining about 'nanny' states, that most of the time in 'Australia' that search and rescue are called out and put their own lives at risk to rescue those who need...
