Re: Father and his kids missing at sea
And those stats don't refer just to the USCG, but to the whole system. Believe it or not there is a world outside the U.S. |

Re: Father and his kids missing at sea
No, what it means is that there were a lot of 'incidents'. A lot of those people would have been rescued by other means in the past. But, regardless, it's a lot of people rescued by the... |

Re: Father and his kids missing at sea
:thumb: Yeah, I initially typed 30 000 as that's what I thought I'd read, but then couldn't find the link if it was challenged, so went with the 2009 stats. either way, it's a lot of souls. |

Re: Father and his kids missing at sea
Yep :thumb: and so do the stats. Over 20 000 people saved (up to 2009) since the Copsas-Sarsat system installed. |

Re: Father and his kids missing at sea
An epirb will 'transmit' for 48 hours as per the standard. A vhf in a rescue situation is useless unless it's transmitting and it can't transmit for very long at all. I'd take a guess at 20 minutes. ... |

Re: Father and his kids missing at sea
If you know exactly where you are, yes. And as long as you can stay where you know you are and convey that to those ships, with the limited battery you have to 'transmit'. Which I'm sure you know... |

Re: Father and his kids missing at sea
Or they were very very tired :whistling: I really don't understand how anyone can belittle the place of epirbs. More than 25000 people have been rescued since the system was begun. It is without... |

Re: Father and his kids missing at sea
If he got rolled, the a vhf wouldn't have been a lot of use. Loose your antenna? Your radio gets soaked? Not a lot of use then. There's no doubt about it, an epirb could have saved all of... |

Re: New EPIRB law in effect in aftermath of teens lost at sea
Well, that's one way to encourage people to carry an epirb and not get all suspicious of big brother.. I like this idea. :thumb: Though I suspect if someone doesn't have an 'epirb' because they can't... |

Re: Father and his kids missing at sea
Finding the boat is pretty much irrelevant now. :nonono: sad, but it won't bring the family back. |

Re: Father and his kids missing at sea
I do think it's possible to legislate for common sense things, yes :thumb: But I'm also conscious that in many parts of the world, that's seen as a nanny state thing. Well, it's worked and worked... |

Re: Father and his kids missing at sea
Just for interests I thought I might put this up. And please note: in Australian waters the phone number to call is 000, not 911. I point that out as thousands of children growing up in the 70's... |

Re: Father and his kids missing at sea
You might keep in mind when your complaining about 'nanny' states, that most of the time in 'Australia' that search and rescue are called out and put their own lives at risk to rescue those who need... |

Re: Father and his kids missing at sea
Compared to the US dollar you would still benefit from buying here. Something else to keep in mind. I think  the USA requires epirbs to be automatic / water activated. Where as in... |
