If that's the case why are storm trysails popular? Not just popular, but compulsory for ocean races. A main with a third reef in is about the same size as a trysail.

My new sail seems to stick well to this guideline. P is 35ft, and the first reef is 4ft up. The second is around 7 1/2 ft.

What is odd is the old main that this one replaced. It has two reefs at...

That's exactly where I put them. Maybe 20% and 40%. Maybe another at higher % would be good for passagemaking?

My old main had two reefs, about 2ft apart. The first reef had almost no effect, and the second wasn't much better. The sailmaker described them as typical for an east coast sail. The new main I had...
