Re: Scary, loud, intermittent transmission/bearing noise
Interesting. I'll file it away as a possible cause. I burped the PSS today and had a nose free trip. We'll see if this keeps up Sent from my SGH-I337M using Cruisers Sailing Forum mobile app |

Re: Scary, loud, intermittent transmission/bearing noise
Cool. I'd never heard of prop singing. Thanks for the pointer. However, since it's a harmonic vortex shedding effect, it would be very limited in rpm range and would always be there. It... |

Re: Scary, loud, intermittent transmission/bearing noise
Hauled it last weekend. Incredible amount of growth on the boat and running gear. The cutlass bearing looks fine. There is no play side to side and about 1/32" up and down. Nigel Calder says I'm... |

Re: Scary, loud, intermittent transmission/bearing noise
Update: I've finally been down and checked the alignment. First step was to spin the shaft. There was some crunching that sounded like mussel shells, then it spun freely. Then I unbolted... |

Re: Scary, loud, intermittent transmission/bearing noise
True. In this case, though, it has occurred with both a clean hull/prop and a dirty one. I do believe the vibrations from a fouled prop have made it worse recently. |

Re: Scary, loud, intermittent transmission/bearing noise
Good questions, though it seems that such a misalignment would be a constant problem and not turn on suddenly? I've never had the noise in reverse, but that doesn't mean it wouldn't happen if I... |

Re: Scary, loud, intermittent transmission/bearing noise
Sweet. Thanks, DeepFrz. Good old MaineSail. I should have known he'd have something. When I say sting I mean strut. Just couldn't find the right word in my brain! |

Re: Scary, loud, intermittent transmission/bearing noise
Thanks, SD. I checked the oil in the Hurth last night and the dipstick was there. Good thought, though. It would have maybe explained the intermittent nature of the issue if there was something... |

Re: Scary, loud, intermittent transmission/bearing noise
We certainly seem to have a consensus building that I'm going to need to look closely at the cutlass. It's only a few years old, but if we had an alignment problem, then that would make sense. The... |

Re: Scary, loud, intermittent transmission/bearing noise
It immediately goes away when I shift into neutral. I'm pretty confident it isn't in the filter. It shakes my feet. I wish it was easier to describe these sorts of things in text! |

Re: Scary, loud, intermittent transmission/bearing noise
This is interesting. I'd basically ruled out a sympathetic vibration because it comes on so quickly (like flicking a switch) and seems pretty insensitive to rpm. It needs a very large drop in rpm... |

Scary, loud, intermittent transmission/bearing noise
Help! I've been dealing with a mystery sound ever since I re-engined with a Beta 35. The install was professionally done by an mechanic with an excellent reputation. Only the engine was changed,... |
