We are on the same page now. It is trully a pain in the ass. Most mariners, even responsible ones dont meet these requirement even if they updae thier charts for the areas they plan to...

So basically what you are saying...

Fork out 25k or you still have to use paper charts?

Also it is more than 25k, as you need to keep the system up to spec each year...

But lets cut to brass...

I dont know of a single sailboat, possibly excluding super yachts, that sails with ECDIS systems.

We all use ECS systems. It is easy enough to find out the system you use - is there a warning...

The data source for charts is not as important and the method of use. Almost no one uses anything other than gps for serious...

So glad you said this. On long passages i leave the plotter off for days just cause i dont need it amd dont want to rcover the amphours with running the engine. Same with radar.

Done numerous passes in SP both pre plotter era and post. Dont see much difference. Finding pass entrance seems to me much easier with plotter. Going through pass at slack water with one aloft...

Seems to me a plotter in the cockpit, a person aloft, and a competant...

I dont generally use paper for day to day navigating. Although on long passages i plot my position on paper charts...some habits die hard i guess

Where i find paper most helpful, as i mentioned...
