Re: Most efficient way to boil water on a boat
Oddly the higher wattage element would use a bit less power. This mainly due to the extraheat loss from the pot for the double amount of time it would take at 750 watts. But then the Peukert factor... |

Re: Most efficient way to boil water on a boat
Diesel does offer more BTU's per gallon or liter then propane. Roughly 31% more. In the US, propane, in California anyway, is $3.50 a gallon and diesel is somewhere between $2.70 to $3.60 a gallon... |

Re: Most efficient way to boil water on a boat
They are sort of kind of technically correct in that an immersion resistive electic heating element is in and of it's self near 100% efficient. That is a Kw input gives you almost a Kw output into... |

Re: Most efficient way to boil water on a boat
Oh dear me. One sometimes wants to heat hot water hotter. So you CAN have a hot water heater, be it a desuperheater, deaerator, a booster heater in a commercial dishwash application (taking 140... |

Re: Most efficient way to boil water on a boat
Sounds about right. Casinos also need cooling year round, (400 watts per slot machine x 3000 slots) though there is some "free" cooling available in northern areas. I think of Missouri as being... |

Re: Most efficient way to boil water on a boat
Nothing like throwing a lot of BTU's to heat water instantly. The typical instant hot water heater for homes run at 160,000 to 199,000 BTUH. That's a bit over 2.2 gallons of propane per hour,... |

Re: Most efficient way to boil water on a boat
For propane at $3.4 a gallon the cost would be 2 cents for two cups (1 pound). So a penny a cup is just about right. For an electric kettle with a 1000 watt element the cost would be about 1.7... |

Re: Most efficient way to boil water on a boat
I'm an engineer, it's what I do for fun. Though more likely with 700 BHP scotch marine steam boilers. But you are right, I still use propane for boiling water. |

Re: Most efficient way to boil water on a boat
You are correct in theory, but much of the heat from a gas burner goes around the pot and not in the pot. So the times are a bit misleading. Burner size and shape, height of pot over flame all play... |

Re: Most efficient way to boil water on a boat
There was a discussion about electric kettles a few years ago. Cotemar is of course 100% correct that a electric kettle in itself is more efficient then a gas or electric stove or microwave. That... |
