Re: Electric Sailboat . . . On The Cheap ?

Capt Mike,

Sounds like typical "sailor frugal" to me. Back in the day, if we burned a pint of fuel to put 1.5Kw/hr into the battery bank, we got a hot shower out of the deal.

I like those...

Re: Electric Sailboat . . . On The Cheap ?

Sounds good Peter. I was thinking maybe you weren't well versed, sorry. The older golf carts used 3 to 4 stage switching of different resistance coils for speed control before the solid state...

Re: Electric Sailboat . . . On The Cheap ?

That would be one huge potentiometer. Speed control, if using DC, should be PWM (pulse width modulated). That would also handle reverse because trying to change polarity with a DPDT would require a...

Re: Electric Sailboat . . . On The Cheap ?

I'm the guilty one of wanting an electric galley, but will have a DC diesel gen-set on board, so a diesel fired heater. On most catamarans there is no reason you can't fit 1 Kw worth of solar atop...

Re: Electric Sailboat . . . On The Cheap ?

Might be me, I'm avid and rabid about EP. For the boat and dinghy, and one step further, a fully electric galley right down to the 1500 watt BBQ on the railing. Were your ratings 5~12Kw up to the...

Re: Electric Sailboat . . . On The Cheap ?

How do tell a Lynch from a Lemco, or are they the same?

Re: Electric Sailboat . . . On The Cheap ?

JRM, by looking at Aberto's pictures I see they are using a Mars motor. Is that the motor your using? If it is, that motor at 96 volts is good for 12 Kw cont., 30 Kw peak. That should have no trouble...

Re: Electric Sailboat . . . On The Cheap ?

Your right about Brushless = safer = less maintenance, and if you use propane that could be an issue as that motor will reside in your bilge, lowest point of the boat and we all know how that 1.5X...

Re: Electric Sailboat . . . On The Cheap ?

Alberto,

You got that right, versatility. I really like the 4.4Kw inverters that run on 48 VDC. So the propulsion bank is also the house bank.

Re: Electric Sailboat . . . On The Cheap ?

Hi, thanks again for the heads up on the Lemco/Yanmar alliance. Got me Internet diving to the point of not wanting to lose all these informative links, so took yours, mine and others to my forum for...

How do you like your EP system? Anything you would do differently?

Re: Electric Sailboat . . . On The Cheap ?

I would like to create a place for everyone thinking about electric, and diesel-electric propulsion, fully electric galley, electric dinghy, diesel DC gen-sets, and 48 VDC (and higher) inverters, can...

Don't worry, we know it isn't an attack, and coming from the same background as you, I know exactly what you are saying. I'm impressed you got 50 mile range from your VW conversion and lead acids....

Re: Electric Sailboat . . . On The Cheap ?

Capt. Mike,

You and I should have a meet and greet. We speak the same language and I could learn from you who have already done it for the boat. Most all of my background is land based electric...

Re: Electric Sailboat . . . On The Cheap ?

If your not running an inverter yet, you can go with a 48 volt inverter. I have one picked out that has a cont rating of 4400 watts, and when plugged into the marina will charge at 60 amps. That is...

Re: Electric Sailboat . . . On The Cheap ?

I have (2) of the original Briggs & Stratton Etek PM brushed motors, one as a spare. The one I'm using is on the same brushes and if you go the brush route, calculate your needs at below 100 amps and...

Re: ELECTRIC SAILBOAT . . . on the cheap?

Mike is correct about being able to direct connect to a brushed motor should the electronic controller fail. The Etek I use is a brushed PM motor, but for the sake of the shaft coupler, I'm not sure...

Re: ELECTRIC SAILBOAT . . . on the cheap?

If you were building for resale to the general public you are correct, 48 volts would be the max without secondary UL approval. I prefer higher voltage so I can have lower amps for the same amount of...

Re: ELECTRIC SAILBOAT . . . on the cheap?

You have to pay attention to wattage, that is out you determine both amp draw for sizing your wire and horsepower. In the above case, 30Kw / 96 volts = 312 amps
30,000 / 746 = 40.2 hp.
If you are...

Re: ELECTRIC SAILBOAT . . . on the cheap?

How do you figure 30Kw peak at $700 as costly? The Lemco line of motors are twice as much for less power. And a rheostat that can handle 300 amps is going to be one honking big rheostat. I'll admit a...
