Re: 30-50 ft LOA non-wooden Gaff-Rigged Sloops and Schooners?

On the mainsail (Bermuda rigged) I'd say the lazyjacks can be a problem. On the gaff foresail I just call the magic flying gaff boom. The saddle drops so wonderfully and the aft end of the sail...

Re: 30-50 ft LOA non-wooden Gaff-Rigged Sloops and Schooners?

I'd say the whole "doesn't come down" issue is more a nuisance than much of anything else.

When I think about it, I do have to admit that the hang up comes as much from rolly seas as the sail is...

Re: 30-50 ft LOA non-wooden Gaff-Rigged Sloops and Schooners?

That's interesting and since I only have experience with this single gaffer I don't know what the norm is. We had been told NOT to use lacings though. We've never had a problem with the leathered...

Re: 30-50 ft LOA non-wooden Gaff-Rigged Sloops and Schooners?

If we would just put a couple fairleads on the front of the mainmast, we'd likely not have an loops of sail catching on the fife rail as we do in certain conditions.

Can't really make things...

Re: 30-50 ft LOA non-wooden Gaff-Rigged Sloops and Schooners?

Our gaff vang--the wonderfully useful but wiley little monster that it is, rigged from the end of the gaff boom up to a block on the mainmast works wonderfully but when we're running or broad...

Re: 30-50 ft LOA non-wooden Gaff-Rigged Sloops and Schooners?

Snowpetrel--you've summed up our laziness except for we have our schooner (https://schoonerchandlery.com/more/14-2/), not a ketch. We didn't put up that big mainsail at all for what ended up being...

Re: 30-50 ft LOA non-wooden Gaff-Rigged Sloops and Schooners?

Bermuda sails became more common in the 1920-1930 timeframe. I suppose things do change over time. Our own boat started life in 1931 as a gaff-fore and gunter-main rigged schooner...

Re: 30-50 ft LOA non-wooden Gaff-Rigged Sloops and Schooners?

Yeah--a little more choreographed dancing to do if no fixed backstay and you're alone on the boat :)

Re: 30-50 ft LOA non-wooden Gaff-Rigged Sloops and Schooners?

Ah...Sailing is really better with 2 people or at least one plus an autopilot.

For the 2 years before we hooked up the autopilot, we did try to have one of us in the cockpit yes. If winds are...

Re: 30-50 ft LOA non-wooden Gaff-Rigged Sloops and Schooners?

Why did it take so many people? On a 12T boat I figure your main was about the size of our 30T boat's gaff foresail (500 sf or so). What did you keep everyone busy doing on each tack? My husband...

Re: 30-50 ft LOA non-wooden Gaff-Rigged Sloops and Schooners?

Oh, Uncivilized! how uncivilized to suggest skinned or splined boats that were once-upon-a-time fine carvel planked ones! Shoo away that idea or brush it under the rug!

Mercater--lovely boat!

Re: 30-50 ft LOA non-wooden Gaff-Rigged Sloops and Schooners?

I'd hesitate to purchase a gaff-rigged boat just because I like the way it looked. OTOH, if you get some sailing time in and you like a gaffer, that's a different story. Our (wooden) boat has the...
