Re: Hot water with electricity from solar panels

Looking at the graph, you could get more output at 800 W / m2, but at 500 W / m2, the panels are close to optimal. Panels mounted on the bimini (like these are according to Seriously Slow) will...

Re: Hot water with electricity from solar panels

I admit that I skipped a few steps when I said that each panel "sees" 16 Ohm.

Think of it this way: The voltage is U (same for both panels, since they are parallel), the current from each panel is...

Re: Hot water with electricity from solar panels

To figure out how it would work if you connect your two 250 W panels (in parallel) directly to the heater, I think you should proceed like this (use at your own risk).

The heater is 1500 W at 110...

Re: Hot water with electricity from solar panels

You must be further north than me with flat mounted panels or you might have a shading issue (or not an MPPT regulator?). At 11 AM yesterday I got 27 Amps from 400 W of flat mounted panels in...

Thanks to everyone who gave constructive input so far. It is great to hear the different approaches being used.

I think this is a really interesting idea. Could you let us know which panels...

Re: Hot water with electricity from solar panels

Quoting from the first paragraph of my post:

Also, some water heaters probably use somewhat more than 700 W at 220 V making these issues even more relevant. My own main inverter is 800 W and would...

Hot water with electricity from solar panels

In another thread, I noticed that some people are contemplating using an inverter to run their water heater on their boats. This is a nice way to use excess power from solar panels. The problem, of...
