Only boats 20 feet and under in the US are required to have positive flotation....

Just read the the NMMA requires it for boats 26 and under to be certified...have not Co firmed that.

But a CC...

Very true....at least to be skeptical.

The USCG lives saved number while accurate in one regard, doesn't necessarily mean that something or someone else wouldnt have saved those people either.

It lasts that long in the arctic....

I found one a week after initial activation and when we pulled it up...the battery was dangling from the wires as the bottom had been knocked off at some...

yes, not in all places though i bet...unless it has improved dramatically in the last 10 years or so.

...even 911 wasn't completely standard so 911 sometimes had trouble figuring out the correct...

yes, the USCG searches for overdues...circumstances and info dictate what actions are taken....and in what order....

While I agree about the general concept of why $200 (with rebate) PLBs are great and that it may become mandatory like other places...

in both cases report it to the normal search authority....it's their job to correlate the flare report value.

When I had young kids..they could flip the switch and turn on a PLB....If VHF DSC was available then...same thing....

Asking panicky occupants whether kids, crew or guests to call or use the VHF...

What was the US or any other place like BEFORE drivers licensing?

I posted before that I would hate to make EPIRBS/PLBs...

what seems odd is the connection to an object about 70 miles from the primary search area.....

Some non traditional search and rescue asset claimed to see a "mast" some 70 plus miles from the...

I just sent a note to NOAA to disregard any attempt for you to register an EPIRB/PLB....

Look at the boat, 29 feet with an outboard.

Talk to me about thru hulls and an anchor versus a $200 item (see that they do come with rebates) on a boat like this, travelling offshore with children...

You are correct in saying there are even cheaper ways of protecting yourself...

But you are incorrect if you are inferring that relying on VHF is a better bet than a PLB.
