Satellite photos can be quite clear down to liferaft sized images...it's just what the government is gonna do for you or who's gonna pay for the civilian imagery.

If you think "generic current charts" are the only relevant data...glad you never worked in my OPCEN....

Not to say they aren't good info to a point and that all these SAR threads are full of...

OK ya got me on semantics...I meant till you use the weather and current data DURING THE TIME PERIOD of the SAR mission....then it's a crap shoot on how accurate your guess is.

yep...every airline pilot I know looks up wind patterns from historical data...asking the tower what the winds are NOW for takeodff would be silly.

not saying you can't generalize...but every SAR...

I just hope if I'm ever lost at sea...the rescuers USE REAL DATA and NOT pilot charts...

Till you guys go back and look at HISTORICAL DATA and not THEORETICAL data you are making yourselves look...

checked the monthly recorded wind patterns for Jun/July 2013 in Wellington, NZ and Canberra, Au and it seems the predominant winds were North and...

Can't say for all situations...but for most it's better for the SAR guys to have a fixed wing on top with your location and status...if they need to drop you something they can..especially important...

as far as the primary signal...ALL CURRENT EPIRB type devices still transmit on 121.5 as a homing signal...

After several posts with tech info supporting the seemingly knowledgeable posters...

Based on PLB performance over the last few years...I have one and no EPIRB....granted I'm a near coastal and ICW guy...and I certainly recommend EPIRBs for the offshore guys.

ALL of the new EPIRBs have the 121.5 homing signal. The reason for this is so the rescue asset can home in on the EPIRB when in a 100 mile rage or so which is well inside the footprint of even non...

Mostly true...it usually delays things a bit...but there is a glitch in that an unrecognized registration code gets spit out of the computer...which means if the computer can't match up the...

Though not often...even well maintained wooden boats pop planks from a quicker than normal failure of fasteners...as far as I know the only way t tell is regular (at least yearly) is ulling fasteners...

Rescue 30 miles off the Atlantic Coast of the USA is a bit different than rescue 300-500 miles off most coasts of the world. Not to say many...
