In 2000, International Cospas-Sarsat Program announced (https://www.sarsat.noaa.gov/phaseout.html)that they were phasing out 121.5 MHz in 2009.

In other words people had 9 years to purchase new...

There is a reason they dicontinued the unit... The Unitied Nations abandond the 121.5 MHz Search & Rescue Sstem almost three years ago and is no longer being used by most search and rescue...
