Re: Starlink and the future of communication at sea

Why do you say this, Franziska? Competition is usually good for us consumers. If Bezos wants to put up a similar constellation & try to compete for my dollars, I'll happily stand back & watch the...

Re: Starlink and the future of communication at sea

Eder, you need to read up on the StarLink system more. The whole object of the exercise is to NOT have satellites in geostationary orbits, as the speed-of-light delay (latency) for that is excessive,...

Re: Starlink and the future of communication at sea

Lance, while I agree with you about when service should be available, StarLink operates on a cell principle. They've divided the world up into cells (areas) & last I heard the military has dictated...

Re: Starlink and the future of communication at sea

Light doesn't actually go very far in a fiber before it has to be received, amplified, & retransmitted, all of which ads to the latency. Also, light in free space is a few percent faster than light...

Re: Starlink and the future of communication at sea

It's usually financially more lucrative to build a service where minimal infrastructure will get you more clients (cell). And StarLink has apparently been told that they have to cover Alaska, which...

Re: Starlink and the future of communication at sea

Tom, I agree. The US govt obviously had so much invested in sat-phones that they picked up the pieces of Iridium & gave it to Boeing. So I would have thought someone would want to provide a better...

Re: Starlink and the future of communication at sea

It's not rumor. The user terminal (UT) antennas are phased arrays with electronically steerable beams. These can actually change the direction of their beam(s) incredibly quickly, but they're being...

Re: Starlink and the future of communication at sea

Hello (may I call you just Hello?:peace:) you're absolutely correct that the birds don't care what's under them, & if any part of the world is covered, so is everything else at that latitude. But...

Re: Starlink and the future of communication at sea

Paul, I've never heard of a phenomenologist - that's hysterical! :thumb:

The initial deployment of 800 birds *will* cover the whole world, except for polar regions (check out the coverage video...

Re: Starlink and the future of communication at sea

Paul, it doesn't cost anything to be a fan. I'm not planning to invest anything just yet. Musk is much more clued up on the economics than me, & he's investing multi-millions. I'll happily watch &...

Re: Starlink and the future of communication at sea

Very surprised at the amount of negativity on this thread. Bill Gates & others planned Teledesic (277 satellites in LEO) back in 2001, but held back when Iridium went belly up, so the concept is not...

Re: Starlink and the future of communication at sea

Paul, the Iridium system covers the whole world with 66 satellites, in real time, continuously. I'm sure Musk can cover the whole world easily with his constellation.
