Re: Rebel Heart's Contribution to the Cruising Community

Not a bad idea, although between propane and gas I don't know how much of a safety difference there is. Converting any gas engine to propane is pretty straightforward.

Generator Conversion Kits...

Re: Rebel Heart's Contribution to the Cruising Community

Ouch. That's going to leave a mark.

But you are correct, and that thread should be a reminder on the truth of the saying that those in glass houses shouldn't throw rocks.

It's nice to see that...

Re: Rebel Heart's Contribution to the Cruising Community

Thank you. Excellent documentary and almost as good as the book. The sight of Joshua with her tall mast and cloud of sails handled by one of the world's most competent sailors contrasting with the...

Re: Rebel Heart's Contribution to the Cruising Community

I suppose one alternative for others who want to cruise dependent on electronically powered systems is to bite the bullet and purchase a small gas powered genset as a backup or primary charge source....

Re: Rebel Heart's Contribution to the Cruising Community

Now, now, Rich, calm down and don't be so self-centered. Just because someone refers to an obnoxious blowhard it doesn't necessarily mean they are talking about you.

Re: Rebel Heart's Contribution to the Cruising Community

That theory was only advanced by one of the usual blowhards, so I doubt anyone living in Realityville would think this. People reveal who they are on blogs. Sometimes, and perhaps frequently, it is...

Re: Rebel Heart's Contribution to the Cruising Community

I have great sympathy for them as it is clear they've been through quite a lot, but piecing together what the heck happened is not easy because of apparently contradictory or confusing information...

Re: Rebel Heart's Contribution to the Cruising Community

More hyperventilation. I said "what they wrote" or what people with direct contact with them said, not what CNN wrote. What was that about you being big on 'reality'?

Re: Rebel Heart's Contribution to the Cruising Community

Ignoring the whacky hyper ventilation of your first paragraph, your second observation demonstrates why a little forthright analysis of what happened is worthwhile. Unless the sequence of events...

Re: Rebel Heart's Contribution to the Cruising Community

Alchemy, you will have no problems this side of lightening bolt anomalies you can't predict or prepare for. In saying that, I assume you have cruised with your long suffering wife offshore and enjoy...

Re: Rebel Heart's Contribution to the Cruising Community

Probably correct. No experienced yachtsman would.

Blessed with an outboard hung rudder, we sailed for 20 years with a trim tab activated by bicycle cables powered by an 10# autohelm windvane...

Re: Rebel Heart's Contribution to the Cruising Community

Perhaps why the couldn't continue, but they were perhaps 1 week from shore? I suppose it wouldn't be the first time someone, given a couple of weeks to think about it, would notice a flaw in a plan...

Re: Rebel Heart's Contribution to the Cruising Community

That's why heaving to is such a useful maneuver. The "conditions" stop being the conditions and you can do all sorts of things you can't do when bashing to weather. I believe Lyn Pardey took those...

Re: Rebel Heart's Contribution to the Cruising Community

Short answer, no. Besides, you're a rich bugger as evidenced by your boat, not a man of the peeps without one, so your opinion on boats and matters pertaining thereto are irrelevant. ;)
