Re: Coppercoat bottom paint

True, but only to a point. Hard paints, while they do not "plume", do release some copper when cleaned. Studies have shown that there is a spike in acute copper levels near boats that are undergoing...

Re: Coppercoat bottom paint

Yes, have your hull cleaned frequently. :D

Honestly? A properly applied, properly maintained Trinidad bottom should last 3+ years. Relatively frequent, gentle cleanings are the way to achieve...

Re: Coppercoat bottom paint

There can be no doubt the amout of fouling depicted is pretty horrendous, regardless of where the boat lives or what anti fouling coating was on the bottom. I wonder though, how much fouling would...

Re: Coppercoat bottom paint

Consider the additional fossil fuels burned by a boat (any boat) in the above depicted condition. Anti fouling is a trade off. Put a little poison into the ocean to reduce carbon emissions put into...

Re: Coppercoat bottom paint

Ewan- if possible, boat builder, model & name of boats wearing Coppercoat here, please. No offense, but I'll need to talk to the hull cleaners of the boats involved to get the straight dope on how...

Re: Coppercoat bottom paint

I see this every day. Here in the Bay Area, the grounding plate of any boat that has one (or two) is typically the foulest real estate on the hull, usually requiring a metal scraper followed by a...

Re: Coppercoat bottom paint

It dawns on me that if you earned your living in marinas, in the water, under boats (as I do), perhaps you'd have a better understanding of my "determination and forcefulness" regarding water quality...

Re: Coppercoat bottom paint

No. While the U.S. has not officially ratified the ban, it is abiding by it. And even if it weren't, most of the world does not allow vessels with TbT on their hulls to enter their territorial...

Re: Coppercoat bottom paint

Yeah, except 57 of 'em have adopted the ban on tributyl tin. But keep telling yourself that it's OK to hate the environment and to do anything you want to it.

Typically cuprous oxide.

"Copper(I) oxide or cuprous oxide is the inorganic compound (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inorganic_compound) with the formula Cu2O. It is one of the principal oxides...

Re: Coppercoat bottom paint

I have no doubt, as there are plenty of posters on this and other forums that report good results with Coppercoat. But again, what works well in one region may not in another. However I suppose it is...

Re: Coppercoat bottom paint

Thanks for the reply Ewan, I appreciate it. I recently cleaned a boat here in the San Francisco Bay that had Coppercoat on the hull that was (despite the owner's insistance that the coating was only...

Lower leach rates typically mean...

Re: Coppercoat bottom paint

Even I am getting pretty tired of seeing my name in this thread, but in the interest of accuracy I will add this: Coppercoat is not a "paint" and shouldn't be considered one. It is a copper-loaded...

Re: Coppercoat bottom paint

I didn't drag this thread off-topic. Merely added my $.02 when others did. And if you feel the real world experience I have to share on the topic of anti fouling coatings isn't worthwhile, by all...

Re: Coppercoat bottom paint

Much too early to say, as there are no commercial applications of this technology being used as an anti fouling in the real world, to my knowledge.

My personal opinion is there isn't an anti...

Re: Coppercoat bottom paint

Your idea of "peace" is taking a pot shot at hull cleaners? I though the anger was supposed to be directed at those higher up on the marine decision chain.

No chips or anger here. But clean...

Re: Coppercoat bottom paint

Which tells you one of two things:

1.- You need to find a new hull cleaner
2.- You need to switch to a less ablative paint

I recognize that it is the fashion for some here to take unprovoked...
