Re: Steel or Aluminum
When the steel cat runs onto rocks it's weight and momentum will generate a lot of force. |

Re: Steel or Aluminum
That table says 100hp is equivalent to 42.5kW, which is about 57 hp, so not triple the power. Add in a bit of salesemanship, and you'll likely find one diesel horsepower is pretty much the same as an... |

Re: Steel or Aluminum
LOL! Common knowledge? OK so here's a plan. Get a 1 KVA Honda genset. Run a 1kW electric motor off it. Because that 1 KVA electric motor is 3 times as powerful, run a 3 KVA generator off that.... |

Re: Steel or Aluminum
Sorry, but I can't see how this is right. 80hp is about 60 kW. You could run a 60 kW generator with a 74 kW diesel. 74kW = 100hp. So a 100 horsepower diesel, if you connect it to a generator... |

Re: Steel or Aluminum
I disagree. Building from prefab flat cored fibreglass panels has many of the advantages of steel, plus a few more. It's far easier and faster to cut. Taping joins is faster than welding IMO.... |

Re: Steel or Aluminum
My 44' cat took around 6000 hours. I know a few others who have taken similar timeframes. No doubt a 65 foot cat in steel or aluminium would take MUCH longer, maybe double that or more. Seems my... |

Re: Steel or Aluminum
It's epoxy, so no osmosis. Polyurethane paint, so gel coat either. No female moulds, it's built from prefabricated panels. I used fibreglass because I wanted a good performing sailboat. Metal... |

Re: Steel or Aluminum
$700,000 for materials only? Seems very high to me. $200,000 and 3 years is optimistic though. Took me $200k and 4 years for a 44 foot sailing cat. |

Re: Steel or Aluminum
The boat would be lighter in Aluminium, there's no getting around that. So it could use smaller motors, carry less fuel and ultimately be cheaper to operate. Steel will be cheaper to build. How... |
