Re: Considering these ideas of navigation.. What is your opnion on it?

Re: Considering these ideas of navigation.. What is your opnion on it?

Could you take two sights of Polaris, first one using (say) the northern horizon, and then the second using the southern horizon? Average the two measured heights to get your latitude. This would...

Re: Considering these ideas of navigation.. What is your opnion on it?

I'm not claiming I use the thing (not since since high school), but the slide rule is in my desk, as a backup to my HP 15-c calculator. Which is a backup to my computer, you know, in case of the...

Re: Considering these ideas of navigation.. What is your opnion on it?

I sincerely doubt that happens anymore, I flew out of Hawaii for the Coast Guard from 2003-2006 and GPS was approved for en-route guidance in IMC, which couldn't have been the case if they were...

Re: Considering these ideas of navigation.. What is your opnion on it?

Local GPS is occasionally degraded or disabled when the U.S. Navy is having large exercises around the Hawaiian Islands. They announce this well beforehand.

I also heard that some of the Iridium...

Re: Considering these ideas of navigation.. What is your opnion on it?

I figure that if I lose my GPS and clocks, I can still do noon sights (with sextant, a calendar, and the Almanac) and run down the latitude until I see land. Not that I expect to need to do this...
