Re: The KISS SSB Counterpoise - Revealed ( with Pics )

Just a WAG, but the KISS is probably on average 90% of the "perfect seawater ground", therefore not a discernable difference between "Perfect" and "Good enough".
(and yes, I did look up the...

Re: The KISS SSB Counterpoise - Revealed ( with Pics )

There was a photo here somewhere, but it consisted of a bunch of disc capacitors forming a parallel line between the ends of two strips of foil.

Re: The KISS SSB Counterpoise - Revealed ( with Pics )

Glenn,

While it is true the Kiss is composed of a bunch of wires of different lengths, it doesn't translate to properly tuned lengths for different bands.
To do what is inferred, the various...

Re: The KISS SSB Counterpoise - Revealed ( with Pics )

If all you are doing is an experiment, you don't really need to attach it to the hull at all.

Re: The KISS SSB Counterpoise - Revealed ( with Pics )

An update on my cheapo $7 counterpoise.
All bands SWR between 1.0 and 1.2
Full RF output power available.
Good signal reports from all contacts so far.
No apparent problems with any of my other...

Re: The KISS SSB Counterpoise - Revealed ( with Pics )

BTW, the copper braid was purchased at a scrap yard for $5.
No length was more than 5 feet, with most being about 3.
I just soldered them together with a propane torch.
The tubing was about $2...

Re: The KISS SSB Counterpoise - Revealed ( with Pics )

I finally got my Icom 706MkII installed.
The ground plane consists of a braided wire about 25 feet long encased in clear vinyl tubing.
I sealed one end with 3M5200 and brought out about 2 feet of...

Re: The KISS SSB Counterpoise - Revealed ( with Pics )

fijisails,
Using that logic, if a bunch of folded up wire works so well, why bother stretching out the kiss? or using a backstay for an antenna?
Just use a similar length of wire rolled up neatly...

Re: The KISS SSB Counterpoise - Revealed ( with Pics )

Taking that further, I suppose an infinite number of them would come close to making an isotropic radiator.

Bill,

The dummy load test is an excellent suggestion, removing another variable.

Re: The KISS SSB Counterpoise - Revealed with pics

A decisive answer can be made simply by doing an A/B comparison with a distant contact.
Use a KISS unit, then quickly transfer the connection to a single piece of wire laid in a reasonably similar...

Re: The KISS SSB Counterpoise - Revealed with pics

It reminds me of those "turn your whole house wiring into a giant TV antenna" things sold back in the '60's and '70's.
They were a plug in device which looked like it had cooling fins on the case....
