If you're buying the boat in Canada you will, as a UK resident be liable for VAT and will have to have it surveyed to check for UK compliance and if not, have any compliance work done.

Either one.. your boat will be limited to 18mths then have to remove it from EU waters and return with proof of such (marina bill, entry/Exit stamp) as proof which then give the boat another 18mths...
