Re: Alternator regulators Balmar or Mark Grasser

We went with the Balmar. After waffling on this I decided to future proof with the fully programmable Balmar. So far it’s been great!

Re: Alternator regulators Balmar or Mark Grasser

I’ve already purchased the replacement VR, I fear that a failure on one part is only going to cascade down the line. I may take the old one to work and see if I can isolate the failed component and...

Re: Alternator regulators Balmar or Mark Grasser

I've only found problems with the Cyrix VSR's (googling for 30 mins) related to installations where the start battery was primary. I'm banking on very little trouble with it as the current it will...

Re: Alternator regulators Balmar or Mark Grasser

As I stated in post #23, My current regulator, an Ample Power SAR-V3 is always on in a low power state monitoring the house bank voltage. If the house bank voltage is above a setpoint (I don't...

Re: Alternator regulators Balmar or Mark Grasser

FWIW I've gone the Balmar route for the regulator and a Victron Cyrix CT for the ACR.

I chose the Balmar over the Grasser so I would have the ability to program differing durations of bulk or...

Re: Alternator regulators Balmar or Mark Grasser

The Ample Power SARV3 has a built in circuit to control a solenoid in the same manner as a stand alone ACR.

I know what I'm describing, and in this case the ACR is a function of the alternator...

Re: Alternator regulators Balmar or Mark Grasser

That is correct. My current alternator regulator operates a parallel solenoid even when the ignition is off. When house bank voltage is above a set point (13 if I remember correctly) the house and...

Re: Alternator regulators Balmar or Mark Grasser

The regulator is intended to remain on in a low power state with the ignition off to control a parallel/combine relay to keep the start battery charged of the house bank voltage is high enough.

Re: Alternator regulators Balmar or Mark Grasser

Any particular reason? Or just prefer to support the small business?

Re: Alternator regulators Balmar or Mark Grasser

That looks really promising. I’ll need to read up on it some more from home. Then decide how much of a project I want to make this.

Our batteries are just now hitting the 10 year mark, so I’m...

Re: Alternator regulators Balmar or Mark Grasser

You’re correct, from what I’ve been able to tell. The Grasser regulator does not have the same adjustability as the Balmar. But......we’ve been just fine with the ample power regulator for years...

Re: Alternator regulators Balmar or Mark Grasser

Very. The regulator is powering the solenoid even though the battery sense wire is registering 12.15 volts. I’ve power cycled the regulator several times and it keeps paralleling as soon as it’s...

Alternator regulators Balmar or Mark Grasser

I’ve got a ample power sarV3 onboard now that has been working flawlessly for 10 years. Until the last week.

I had wired the current regulator to control the parallel solenoid, and it has. But...
