I think in this case the reason was pragmatics of a trailer - the mast was too long to do without support from spreaders and the designer did not want the owners to mess about with spreader angles,... |

Backstay not required in fractional rig as long as the top of the mast section is man enough to hold up to the pressure from the top portion of the main. Many boats do without backstays. Some do... |

As per Weyalan's post. I too have seen them on cats before and on some skiffs. I often look at our rig (single spreader) and think having such a design here would simplify a couple of things. ... |
