Re: Capsize Ratio's

Well. I believe we could build a well sailing, well grounding ;-) boat. But we would have to build her in technology / materials that are used in racing. Now if we did this, the price would be...

Re: Capsize Ratio's

This depends on what aspect of strength we will look at.

A new HR will not take a grounding quite as well as and older HR would - different rudder/keel design and new hulls much less resistant to...

Re: Capsize Ratio's

It does not matter if the max moment is at 60, 90 or elsewhere. It is the moment that counts, not where its peak falls.

If we want to think about the max/min values of the moment, I'd rather...

Re: Capsize Ratio's

Seen a Lord Nelson slide from the truck and then another boat of similar construction toppled in the boatyard. There was some damage and both boats got fixed.

Seen a B****** beached on a sandy...

Re: Capsize Ratio's

And do we have any cruising boats built of modern light and strong materials floating around? If so, which ones are they?

Boats meant for family offshore adventure, where carbon, kevlar and space...

Re: Capsize Ratio's

ad 1) the racey one - it has one more storm tactic option,

ad 2) draw,

ad 3) the racey one, then hire a bungalow at destinations,

ad 4) draw, unless one design flawed.

Re: Capsize Ratio's

IMHO the 'amateurs' rant vs. Fastnet does not really apply here: an amateur racer will actually drive a boat far more competently than many a non-racer sailor.

Racing is a pretty specific mode of...

Re: Capsize Ratio's

+1!

The boat may ultimately survive, this however does not imply the crew, locked inside, will!

Re: Capsize Ratio's

Yep. There are some poorly designed/built boats around. Many of them are great in the marina or on the harbour cruise but they are far from the minimum-optimum tool for an offshore passage.

I...

Re: Capsize Ratio's

That's how you get bashed and rolled - by assuming there is little else one can do.

People 'hunker down and wait'. For a capsize.

Wrong!

9/10 a boat with bare poles, drogues and with her...

Re: Capsize Ratio's

If I recall right, there was also some issue with the organizers not realizing / not informing / etc.. So we have the human factor to quite an extensive degree: some people sent some other people...

Re: Capsize Ratio's

The point is, some did not. A subject for another thread probably, together with other racing disasters like the Hobart one.

Re: Capsize Ratio's

+1!

I believe boats get into trouble offshore due to:

- skipper's inexperience,
- human error,
- equipment failure,
- lack of adequate maintenance,
- etc.,

Re: Capsize Ratio's

The HR curve is give FULL LOAD. I assume this implies full water and fuel tanks.

Yours is a good question. I only design small things hence my experience with AVS is limited to playing around with...

Re: Capsize Ratio's

Sure if you want to sell me two IDENTICAL boats and one of them has AVS 150 and the other 110 then I may strongly lean towards the first one!

Love,

Re: Capsize Ratio's

OK.

I actually meant a different aspect - the actual sailing skills necessary to sail these two different types of designs. Off course, in the end, this leads (should lead) to results when trying...

Re: Capsize Ratio's

Yes, I know.

(Now) cruising sailors come from varied backgrounds. If all one sailed before were heavy tubs that move at 4 knots in any direction (except the intended one) then such cruisers are...

Re: Capsize Ratio's

Pogo are not cruising boats. They are racing boats.

They are good cruising boats when sailed by sailors. Maybe less so when sailed by cruisers.

Re: Capsize Ratio's

Funny indeed.

Reading Marchaj casts different light on the subject. He ads the fact that the boat and the wave are in movement - unlike static boats on static waves in a static drawing. Observing...

popcorn!

And what happens if we start at the other end, the outdated methods, you know ... we look at the boat first, we sail her some, then we look into the tables.

I think many of the boats...
