Re: DC to DC charger - not needed for boats with proper alternators.

Oops. Not Tuss Tuss. Putt Putt. I'm almost as bad at names in real life!

Re: DC to DC charger - not needed for boats with proper alternators.

I really don't disagree with the abyc limit. I get it. It's like the rules that require a 12-year-old swim team member fishing in a 100 ft wide Creek 3 ft deep that has to wear a life jacket. Or...

Re: DC to DC charger - not needed for boats with proper alternators.

Putting aside safety for a moment, ABYC puts a hard limit of 4 terminals, and you have 5. And we all know that if you are not abyc compliant your boat will sink while burning and insurance won't...

Re: DC to DC charger - not needed for boats with proper alternators.

I think that the distinction is not the difference between 1 hour and the 10 hours it would take to fill your bank. Rather, it is a response to those that say that LFP will kill an alternator...

Re: DC to DC charger - not needed for boats with proper alternators.

A significant problem with using a dc/dc charger to protect the alternator is it only derates the alternator at cruising speed. If you are running the engine at 1000 RPM for a while, not an ideal...

Re: DC to DC charger - not needed for boats with proper alternators.

Yes, I believe that an external driver to shut the regulator off well before a HVC is critical (and then eliminates the need for "managing" a disconnect, either by an in-line LA or a DC-DC or...

Re: DC to DC charger - not needed for boats with proper alternators.

This is perhaps the biggest argument for the biggest alternator you can fit with no limitations on the route to the battery. Those who sail the most, or are at anchor for long times, are heavily...

Re: DC to DC charger - not needed for boats with proper alternators.

So, more detail above. My point, which the above only reinforces, is that with a robust AGM bank and normal alternators (or even above normal, as I have), many cruisers already run the alternator at...

Re: DC to DC charger - not needed for boats with proper alternators.

I have 800Ah of AGM charged by a pair of 120A alternators excited by a pair of Balmar regulators. Nothing anywhere is "Lithium."

If I'm well down in the morning, say 60% SOC, I won't reach...
