Re: Father and his kids missing at sea

The logical assumption is that the boat sank, based on the flotsam. Still an assumption without corroboration at this point though.

Re: Father and his kids missing at sea

We know very little about what happened, including whether the boat sank and whether the boys died. Of course, it is assumed that both those things happened, but that is not based on much physical...

Re: Father and his kids missing at sea

I think a tether that keeps you in the boat might increase your chances pretty markedly. If you are singlehanding and are further out than you care to swim back, tethers are pretty helpful if you use...

Re: Father and his kids missing at sea

It is also, again, not even close to what I said.

If someone is in a bind, and asks for help, of course you help. Nowhere did I say anything different. If someone has a boat in bad repair and is...

Re: Father and his kids missing at sea

Again, my points are outlined above.

I have no interest in getting into an argument and your sarcasm does not seem to advance any information or point of view. You don't like my request for...

Re: Father and his kids missing at sea

I think that is hard to tell from what gets reported. In this particular case, it seems the boat was overdue plus the brother received the phone call saying they were struggling. Whether you put this...

Re: Father and his kids missing at sea

Not joking. You seem to be not reading terribly closely. What I have said is that of course they respond to maydays. So in your scenario, SAR would respond because someone has asked for their help. ...

Re: Father and his kids missing at sea

Why can't they respond to mayday calls, but not to reports that someone without an EPIRB is missing/late?

In the first case, someone is asking for help. In the second case I think that person has...

Re: Father and his kids missing at sea

Now that is a policy I can endorse.

Re: Father and his kids missing at sea

I would appreciate it if everyone could manage to keep their comments polite and not personal.

Thanks.

Re: Father and his kids missing at sea

I don't think anyone knows anything about what actually happened, their gear, their experience, or the actual condition of the boat. There are no conclusions to be drawn either way because we simply...

Re: Father and his kids missing at sea

Or, rescue would not have been necessary if only they adhered to basic tenets of seamanship.

Re: Father and his kids missing at sea

My statement was not "I can't afford $300", it was that $300 is a lot of money. If something for the boat costs $300 I really think it over before choosing whether to buy it or not. I just had to buy...

Re: Father and his kids missing at sea

I definitely appreciate that point of view, and I know how much they cost ($300 is expensive to me) and what they do. I can certainly agree they have saved lives. I also can see that they can...

Re: Father and his kids missing at sea

I do not want to be forced to carry an expensive piece of gear I do not want onboard.

I would think concentrating on ensuring all aboard have basic seamanship skills and ensuring the...

Re: Father and his kids missing at sea

At least one of the bodies recovered did have a PFD on. Have not heard about the other.

Good to keep in mind that dad may have been the first one overboard. If the kids were depending on his...
