Re: Chart Sticker Shock 2018
Sure, but Benz's point was that "easy" is not the primary value -- those who have brains don't necessarily need "easy". I actually agree with him there! But "easy" is not the only, or even the main... |

Re: Chart Sticker Shock 2018

Re: Chart Sticker Shock 2018

Re: Chart Sticker Shock 2018
Not if you think in different units. They don't have thousand and million. They have lakh and crore : 1,00,000 and 1,00,00,000. Pretty cool, eh? |

Re: Chart Sticker Shock 2018
What to use as a digit group separator and decimal separators (the technical term) has nothing to do with the metric system. It's just a question how you write numbers, and the question exists no... |

Re: Chart Sticker Shock 2018
Traditional measures are not necessarily devoid of LOGIC, but they are highly complex, relate to each other in complex ways, and are poorly standardized. They grow out of a different age and... |

Re: Chart Sticker Shock 2018
This is absolutely true! I learned it the hard way in the Swedish and Finnish archipelagoes where the water is so complicated that no one has gotten around to surveying all the places where... |

Re: Chart Sticker Shock 2018
Actually, it's NOT Imperial -- Mariano, you were right without even knowing it. We do NOT use Imperial measures in the U.S. -- we use U.S. Customary Units or USCU which differ from imperial measures... |

Re: Chart Sticker Shock 2018
Good advice! :thumb: You are correct that England is, by and large, on the metric system, but the English do still use statute miles for distance on land, and not kilometers, and people are... |

Re: Chart Sticker Shock 2018
Some charts are based on surveys literally centuries old. I don't know, but I would be surprised if the age of the data has anything to do with it. It would sure be nice if charts were marked to... |

Re: Chart Sticker Shock 2018
Sure. The metric system is really good for quick calculations in your head. It concretely improves your ability to apply units of measure to complex tasks. It's also really good for areas --... |

Re: Chart Sticker Shock 2018
Just like any mission critical system -- have backups. Charts can "take a dump", too -- they can get blown away overboard, things spilled on them, etc. It's much, much harder and more expensive... |

Re: Chart Sticker Shock 2018
Ya, exactly. I prefer to have an electronic vector chart at the helm for real time pilotage, but to do all planning and all navigation with paper. However, it is absolutely impossible even on a... |
