Re: Solar, off grid and heat problem
Anything where safety is a question is MUCH more expensive in the U.S. due to our cockamamie tort system and resultant products liability insurance cost! Just try to buy a life raft in the U.S.!... |

Re: Solar, off grid and heat problem
I guess to each his own, but I don't much get using gas to heat a boat. What is the advantage over diesel fuel, which is perfectly safe, which is cheaper, and which you already store on board in... |

Re: Solar, off grid and heat problem
Winter sailing is a special joy, understood perhaps not by all sailors. One other comment -- don't use propane heaters on a boat! Most of them They are forbidden by ABYC -- for good reason! --... |

Re: Solar, off grid and heat problem
Sounds like you're on the right track. Solar is the ideal power source if you have room for it. So even forgetting about heating with it, it's great to have. For heating -- I think you really... |

Re: Solar, off grid and heat problem
We use tube heaters to keep boats from freezing in the mild winters on the South Coast of England. The smallest ones are about 120 watts, I think, and you need multiple ones. Fiberglass boats are... |

Re: Solar, off grid and heat problem
Look up Webasto and Espar. You can run these even if you're not on board. They are available with remote control devices which you can activate with a text message, or you can set a timer. But... |

Re: Solar, off grid and heat problem
Just do the math and you'll see that you can't get useful heat from a 150 watt (or even 500 watt) solar panel. You'll need to burn something when you don't have shore power. I'm not aware of any... |
